MARCH ON WASHINGTON '99

Question:

says… But one thing is clear – he/she has the right to express that sentiment. Your expression of intollerance is decidedly un-American.

You’re right. Back in the late sixties and early 70s, the slogan "America — love it or leave it" was frequently used against me and other liberals who were advocating change.  I didn’t approve of it then and I don’t approve of it when it’s used now against conservatives. America — love it and change it.

Response:

Thank you for reminding me of that era of history. I remember conservatives in that time suggesting that liberals stop crying about things that were wrong, and work for a change within the system, instead. Things changed. America is decidedly more liberal today than it was 30 years ago. This nation is not perfect. But the framework is there to allow someone to express their views and work constructively to change things when we see that they are wrong. We need to remember that is a part of what made American great, and that is a part of what can be done to return her to greatness.
