Why Won't the American Cancer Society Recommend Lung Cancer Screening to Save Lives

Question:

You are obviously much smarter than me so would you please explain the following. 1. Do you agree that we now have survival rates of 60 to 80% for stage 1 lung cancers and survival rates dramatically lower for stage 4 lung cancers.    If so, wouldn’t getting these lung cancers diagnosed earlier save lives.   Do you dispute the statement that the cancer of mortality for most lung cancers is not the cancer itself but the metastasis to other organs. How on earth if survival is related to stage, can’t early diagnosis help.   2. I talked to a friend.  He says he brought $100.00 to the mall.  He noticed that when he bought some things that he had less money in his wallet at the end of the day.  However, before concluding that spending money reduces the amount of money you have at the end of the day, he has proposed an epemiological study of 50,000 people to see whether the hypothesis holds true. 3. Check Gary Strauss’ work at Harvard who re-evaluated the data in the Mayo Clinic and other studies and found reduced mortality from early diagnosis.  In any case, please explain what you believe to be the explanation for the studies. 4. I believe that when these studies took place, the prognosis for all forms of lung cancer was poor, so stage and time of diagnosis was less signficant.   Today knowing that early diagnosis is the key, it is critical that we urge people to use the available tools for early detection.

An Interview with the American Cancer Society

The real truth is that 3 large US trials and a Czech trial showed no improvment in survival when screening for lung cancer was instituted in smokers. There were certainly problems with how those trials were done and the PLCO trial is underway in the US to re-evaluate lung cancer screening. So before you read and believe this utter nonsense, you might read some informative material so that you know more than the idiotic author of this drivel.
