International Departure Tax from US
Question:
Recent budget increased International departure tax from $6 to $24. Last I heard US airlines were lobbying against it. What is the current status? Are airlines challanging it /trying to get it repealed? Thanx Deepak

===== Deepak, the NEW US INTL DEPARTURE TAX is $12.00, the NEW US INTL ARRIVAL TAX is $12.00. These taxes are collected for departures and arrivals beginning 01OCT97 on tickets issued beginning 13AUG97. As I understand the gibberish, the tax is not collected for someone stopping in the US for an onward connection without a stopover (in transit). Also, as I understand the gibberish, the immigration control and agricultural fees all remain the same at $6.50 and $1.45. —– Rob Schlesinger, CTC Typed in Long Beach, CA – USA President Two Brothers Travel, Inc.
Response:
As a follow-up Canada is eliminating their ATT over the next 1.5 year.s Now maximum of $55 per ticket will go to $30 in March and Zero by the end of next year. This coincides with the privatization of the airports and the charging of local airport fees. — Darren Downs Vancouver, B.C. Canada
