Hemp ale?
Question:
I was reading an article the other day on the Brew Your Own webpage about brewing beer with hemp. They said that it is legal as the ingredient in pot that makes you all messed up is not present after the boil. I do have access to a Hemp Ale that is brewed in British Columbia, and I am wondering if anyone on this group has ver tried a beer brewed using hemp. How does it affect taste, aroma, the buzz?? Thanks, Mike

Yes, hemp is legal in Canada, I have had several beers made from hemp, including the one from BC you mentioned, and to be honest they’re nothing special. They actually taste a bit on the sour/acidic side. As for THC, the active drug in marijuana, it is not really present at all in hemp. The crop has been genetically modifed so the percentage of THC in the hemp is almost zero. So no effect at all on "the buzz". Marc

I just had a hemp ale at Pizza Port Brewing in Carlsbad, California. It was very unique to say the least. But it was good. I just don’t think I would ever drink 5 gallons of it though. http://www.pizzaport.com/ is their address. If you’re in the area I highly recommend these guys, Kirk does a wonderful job of brewing using mostly Chico ale yeast.

My understanding is that THC, at least as present in hemp blooms, is not water soluble. I’ve also heard that it isn’t particularly flavorful, but that is second hand and off Usenet to boot. — |Drew Lawson | Of all the things I’ve lost | |http://www.furrfu.com | |

Hemp DOES NOT contain THC. Hemp is not marijuana, it is a very close relative. Actually, because it is a close relative, Dupont attacked marijuana with smear campaigns and lobbied congress to have it made illegal. This is because they had a synthetic fiber that they had spent a lot of money to develop only to find there was no market for it because everyone used hemp (at one time, it was ILLEGAL NOT to grow hemp if you owned land in the state of Virginia). The movies, ad campaigns and lobbying worked and now nylon is the predominant fabric in industry. True story. After years of trying to debunk the myth that THC kills brain cells, the strong efforts made by Dupont to create mass hysteria over this drug have kept people believing this and Hemp illegal in the U.S., even though it DOES NOT contain THC. Hemp seeds are NOT illegal in the U.S. and can be used freely as ingredients in things such as beer. Fredrick brewing company, right down the street from me mass produced the first hemp ale. Hemp is actually a great fiber and also produces a massive amount of breathable oxygen form the live plant. It would be of great benefit to us, but it will be a long time before people can get past their fears and even consider legalizing hemp. (BTW, as mentioned earlier, THC does not kill brain cells, it lowers the L-Glutamine level in the brain. This is necessary to carry signals from one cell to another. That is why "burn-outs" talk and think and move slowly. If they quit, eventually their Glutamine level would return to normal and they would be normally functioning humans again.) Richard

They’re actually the same species (Cannabis sativa). The differences are varietal. Modern marijuana was developed through selective breeding of hemp plants in order to accentuate the THC producing parts of the plants. Oh, and fiber hemp does contain THC, just in concentrations so low that it’s useless as a drug. Brina

Most Hemp Beers I have tried were nothing great to brag about but neither were they awful Either. Buzz…only from alcohol The department of defense did a study recently 100 volunteers As many varieties of hemp beer as they could find Volunteers would drink a beer then pee in a test cup after each beer. Volunteers in the course of 12 hours drank as much as two cases each. Each sample was tested for THC… Samples tested positive for THC 0.00 % Conclusion of Department of Defense : If a soldier tests positive for THC they were smoking something illegal. No way it was from Hemp in Beer. Why couldn’t they have done this survey while I was in the Army. Boy I bet it was hard to find Volunteers for that survey

I’ve tried three hemp ales. Here is my BEST attempt at describing the tastes and character of these beers. Out of three beers, the only one that was half-way decent was at the Humboldt Brewing Company in Arcata, CA. Even that beer was no match of even their lightest of lagers. Here’s a great way to simulate the taste. Pour a glass of your least favorite lager. Place a burlap sack over the top. Now suck that beer through the burlap sack and BOOM! You’ve got what I tasted. It was like cardvoard, no hop characteristics, no "extra" buzz. There seems to be this lack of knowledge out there regarding HEMP largely caused in most recent times by Nancy Regan and her drug crusades. Most people I talk to think "HEMP" is "Dope, Pot, Ganja" whatever – you know the stuff from Reefer Madness. It is NOT. In fact, you will find that because of the low concentration of THC in hemp, if one was to try and smoke it as "marijuana" they would get ill. Do you know what the constitution of the United States is written on? HEMP paper… How about all of that fabric used in World War II for carriers, clothes, medic stretchers? Ever wonder why those fabrics are STILL around in surplus stores today? You guessed it – They are made of HEMP. Hops are related to hemp/cannabis. My suggestion for all of those out there that realize that the "wool is being pulled over our eyes" to go out and buy the book "The Emporer Wears No Clothes" and while you read it relax…drink a homebrew. Oh man, do I ever miss that place. Driving up to Carlsbad (from La Jolla) for beer ‘n’ pizza was one of the highlights of living down there. *pine* Colin — | / / Colin Bigam why should I put my PGP key / /| | / / is _not_ here address down here? available / / |

OK, you got my attention. Hows about this: A large field of marijuana (not hemp) and a hive or two of bees. Collect the honey and make mead. Would this be a ‘feel good’ mead? I’m intrigued.
