California Border Inspection and my cat
Question:
The whole airhead confession by Snowshoe on how she pulled a fast one on the dumb-dumb Ag Inspector at the border, (Tee-he-he, isn’t she a cute & clever one?) who was too stupid & lazy to turn her rig inside out (causing a jam up & wait no doubt) knows nothing about respect toward neighbors, much less anything about biology. All she’s concerned about is having lemon in her Sam’s cola, so it wouldn’t taste so icky! Besides! What does this have to do with her kitty? If I did like she freely admits, I’d keep quiet about it. This is prime example why I’ve always held, that rules & laws (including speed limits) are made up for selfish idiots, & assholes, who don’t know, or care, how to act like they should anyway. "Typhoid Mary" always worked as a cook until she finally got caught! I hope the "Guardian Angels" of fools like snoshoo, are looking out

As someone who has lived through areal spraying of malathion, and seeing farmers having their lively hood ripped out by the roots and burned.. Well, of course, you are ultra sensitive about this issue. Perhaps you should work toward requiring border guards to be a bit more thorough with their searches. I could have had a couple of bushels of whatever is illegal in the back of my Blazer in plain view and he not only wouldn’t have seen them, nor would he have asked.
yeah, knucklehead, that’s just exactly what we need. Another excuse for the government to do a warrantless search. I have a different idea. Yeah, it’s gelling now. How ’bout we all act like adults even if we’re not and get with the program. Stopping bug infestation is to all our benefits. If you tell the truth when asked about produce, there is no need for the search. Bet you’d be the first one to bitch when food prices go up after an infestation. There’s a time for joking. I could have had a couple of bushels of whatever is illegal in the back of my Blazer in plain view and he not only wouldn’t have seen them, nor would he have asked. He never asked me WHY he HAD to look in my RV fridge, but from my experience in being stopped at the AZ state line in the past, I knew what he wanted in my fridge. Likely looking for fruit of some kind. all because some Yahoo thought it was cool to sneak fruit into the state…. I didn’t think it was "cool" at all, nor am I a Yahoo. If it soothes you a bit, tho, I had three little lemons (*certainly* not grown in my state and likely brought to my supermarket FROM California to begin with) in a plastic container under my bed. The reason I carry them is that I like fresh lemon in my Sam’s Choice cola. :) The lemons NEVER left my trailer and I’m certain they didn’t infect anything in California. My cat, tho, now has to take Heartworm medicine because of the mosquitos you have in your lovely state. Maybe when spraying for fruit (and ripping someone’s livelihood out by the roots) some mosquito elimator could be added to the mix. I’m sure your dogs and cats would be grateful. I don’t see the joke (I was going to say something somewhat more forceful.. but…) Please do if it makes you feel better. Great joke, alright, but on who? The cleverly named Dum-Dum, doing his best to keep contaminated fruit out of CA, or the oh-so-clever guy who routinely hides fruit under his bed? Funny place for foodstuffs, unless you’re talking midnight snacks, just don’t give a damn, or enjoy the thrill of putting one over on someone. Same sort of joke as the illegal campfire types who leave embers in their fire rings when they break camp around here. The police are still actively hunting the clods who caused the Jasper fire, by deliberately doing something along those lines. Sometimes it’s hard to understand jokes. Canoli

Hmmmm…I was told by my Calif. host to check my mpg with the $1.93 Beacon and then buy higher priced gas and again check my mpg. Evidently, Beacon gives poor gas mileage in his experience. snoshoo

I think the additives in Calif. are different because of the smog restrictions. The major brands usually have more additives while discount gas has the minimum required. Uncle Bridge

So-called re-formulated Calif gas cost the refineries a lot of money to convert. Gas went up about 15 cents a gallon. Smog was supposed to be reduced (it was). True, in addition to price going up, mileage dropped by about 10%. But now Calif has discovered that the ‘re-formulated’ has had cancer causing effects and wants top again change the re-formulation. Progress???? MrRagtime

I don’t support California – recently established residence in Nevada because of Calif. ridiculous prices and taxes. But you can’t compare apples and oranges. Georgia, a relatively poor state, probably has the lowest fuel prices in the nation. I paid $1.24 for diesel in Mar/Apr and they probably haven’t got an oil refinery in the state.. My main objection in Calif is a 30-50 cent price difference within a hundred miles or so and a 15 cent difference from one side of the street to the other. Luckily, I have about a 1500 mile range and can often fuel up in lower priced states. Latest Calif scam! Since 1992, they charged a flat $300 smog??? fee to register a used out-of-state vehicle in Calif. Unconstitutional! Now they have set aside $250,000,000 for refunds – if you have your old paperwork and file for a refund. Have YOU got your 1992, 1993 or even 1994 registration certificate? Or proof of transfer??? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -I recall Cal trying to tax pensions of folks who had retired and left the state; friendly place.

Northern Washington State. I paid $1.57 yesterday. Up from $1.49 a couple weeks ago. A bit less than $2+ in CA. Did find $1.93 at Beacon – whoopee! but I have yet to find Calif gas prices any higher than Oregon, or Mass, or NY, or NJ or IL, or Canada, or Mexico and on and on.
My, defensive aren’t you? <g snoshoo

Well, hang on there, Mr. Snoshoo, Wal Mart in Florida is experimenting with selling gas at their superstores, and have petitioned the state for permission to sell it below cost. Together with free camping and overnighting, WM will become the cheapsters paradise. Now if we could get them to give away gas free with purchases, wouldn’t that be something? Imagine, a roll of $1.50 toilet paper, plus free gas, and a free campsite to boot. Perhaps we ought to threaten a boycott unless we get our way. Canoli

Unfortunately, we (in Nevada) still pay the price for the insanity that goes on in CA. I recall a few years back when CA blew a major transmitting line, Nevada Power Co asked Las Vegas to turn down our Air Conditioners because people in So. Ca. were suffering in the heat…it was about 80 in LA and 118 here in Vegas! I set my A/C to 50, let them eat ice! Almost caught a cold <G. So our power and water gets sold to So. CA and we get higher prices..ditto Gas prices. Gas comes down the Cal/Neva pipeline from Colorado, but they want the higher prices that they can get in Riverside, so we pay $1.81/gal for unleaded. ‘Bout the only thing we get from CA anymore is refugees. In fact, we get very few Veggies from CA anymore, they priced themselves out of the market. Most of the Veggies we get here are from South America anymore. The really funny one was a few years back; you couldn’t rent a U-Haul to go from LA to Nevada, you had to come up here, rent one, drive down there and bring your load up. So many people were leaving Ca that they couldn’t keep enough trucks for local hauling. As people leave, they raise the taxes to fill the gap. I pity the last guy left there…his taxes will be astronomical!!! John

But of course, the liberals NEED that money to buy votes from the folks that they redistribute it to. How else do you expect them to stay in office?? I have a solution. Lets give TAXPAYERS voting power that is proportional to the amount of taxes that they pay… MORE TAXES…..MORE VOTES…..sounds fair to me!! That’s one of the things in my previous note about them being into your jeans well after you leave! Once you live here they want a piece of your pie from then on. By the time the average vehicle is 15 years old and has been sold a few times they have collected more in taxes and registration fees than the car was originally worth! They even show up at swap meet/flea markets trying to collect sales tax on used items. They are currently working real hard with other states lobbying to collect sales tax on anything that ships from the state such as items sold on the net to purchasers in other states. This is why in 1977-78 we tax revolted and had our initiative Proposition 13 passed restricting the property tax they can suck out of us. They are still trying everything they can think of to overturn that or get around it. Owning a small business in Ca is another whole distressing can of worms. We currently have a large surplus in state income tax collected. But, they treat it like it’s their money to spend and invent many ways to avoid giving back OUR MONEY! That wasn’t my experience in March of this year, coming out of NV into Cal, OR and WA. Cal was noticeably higher, even for the US West Coast. Comparing prices with friends in the SE shows West Coast prices to be higher. Makes you wonder how a state like FL, with relatively low fuel taxes, no personal income tax, weight-(not value-)based registration, lower property valuations and 6-8% sales tax can actually get by — Must be the sales tax revenue on recreational pharmacuticals? Nah, if that were workable, Cal would be awash in cash… I recall Cal trying to tax pensions of folks who had retired and left the state; friendly place. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Inspection at Calif borders is for agriculture ONLY. A few weeks ago I posted a query regarding a warning my cat’s vet gave me that a health certificate might be demanded upon entering California and several people here replied <thank you. Our experience at the OR/CA border was that the officer didn’t seem to see (or care) about my cat plainly dozing on his perch in the back of my Blazer (very shaded windows might have been the reason). All he said to me what that he *had* to look in the refrigerator in my trailer. So I took him back there and he thoroughly inspected it, not finding any fruit or anything else he didn’t approve of. <g Whew! Gas costs about $.50 per gallon more in CA than where I live.
