THE SABRA AND SHATILA CASE IN BELGIUM
Question:
Hey Abu Alfalfa, I assume that this means that you also support war crimes trials for some of the human-rights violators who in 1982 perpetrated the Syrian government massacres in the cities of Homs and Hama (killing many more thousands than died in Shabra and Shatila in 1982)? According to the CSM article at http://www.csmonitor.com/durable/2000/06/20/fp1s3-csm.shtml , Assad’s brother Rifaat, who commanded the attack on Hama, "is reported to have once chided someone who suggested that 7,000 people died at Hama, by boasting that 38,000 had died"! Funny, the Israeli government held a very detailed investigation by a public commission of inquiry into Sabra and Shatilah (even though not one Israeli lifted a gun to act directly against the inhabitants of the Lebanese camps on that occasion), but somehow I just don’t remember reading about any Syrian commission of inquiry into the Homs and Hama massacres. Can anyone give me even an approximate date as to when these loathesome and despicably vile Syrian terrorists and war criminals who perpetrated the Homs and Hama massacres will be put on trial for their crimes against humanity? If not, why not? Are you calling for the Belgians to put them on trial also?? If not, then it seems to me that you’re nothing more than a transparent blatant hypocrite! — SAUDIA OMNIS IN PARTES TRES DIVIDENDA EST! In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful THE SABRA AND SHATILA CASE IN BELGIUM: A GUIDE FOR THE PERPLEXED Laurie King-Irani, International Campaign for Justice for the Victims of Sabra and Shatila, 16 June 2003 "Reports announcing the death of the case lodged by survivors of the Sabra and Shatila massacre in Belgium have been greatly exaggerated and persistent, but to date, categorically false. For supporters of the growing global campaign against impunity for war crimes and crimes against humanity, the good news is that this case is still very much alive, although it has been affected by rulings of the International Court of Justice, wear and tear on Belgium’s bi-lateral ties with the US and Israel, and a global political context that has sharpened debate about war crimes, impunity, and the limitations and requirements of international criminal prosecution." Laurie King-Irani, North American Coordinator for the International Campaign for Justice for the Victims of Sabra and Shatila, explains recent political and legal twists and turns in the landmark war crimes case in Belgium. http://electronicIntifada.net/v2/article1568.shtml
