Palestinians observe general strike in Jerusalem to protest apartheid wall, assault on worshipers
Question:
Palestinians observe general strike in Jerusalem to protest apartheid wall, assault on worshipers Feb 29, 2004, 23:10 Occupied Jerusalem – Shops and businesses throughout Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem closed doors Sunday, heeding a call for a general strike from the Supreme Muslim council. The protest, said Sheikh Muhammed Hussein, a high-ranking official of the Wakf Department in al-Qods, is to protest Israel’s apartheid wall in the West Bank and the Zionist raid on al-Aqsa Mosque esplanade Friday. "We are voicing our solidarity with our brothers and showing our disgust and strong rejection and opposition to this ugly wall. "We are also protesting the unjustified flagrant attack by the Israeli police on the esplanade of the Aqsa Mosque." The apartheid wall is almost completely cutting off Eastern Alquds from the rest of the West Bank, causing economic suffocation and preventing some three million Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip from visiting their respective holy places in the city. The Israeli apartheid state says the wall is aimed at preventing Palestinian guerillas from entering Israel. However, Palestinians and human rights organization contend the gigantic structure is intended to annex hundreds of square kilometers of Palestinian land and confine Palestinians into prison-like enclosures. http://www.palestine-info.co.uk/
