Does it bother you?

Question:

Nike is being sued for the use of sweatshops in Asia. I bring this up in teen newsgroups because the group that buys most Nike stuff are teens. One of the visitors to my e-zine blames teens for the abuses that Nike is accused of. She claims that you and me are to blame for not caring. What do you think? If you want to read the rest of her argument you can visit my site and go to "Hit Me", the page in my site dedicated to discussing current events. In any case, let me know what you think. — Heidi Rogers Publisher, CyberGrrlz "The e-zine for girls with brains and a sense of humor" (smarter guys will like it too) http://www.cybergrrlz.com

Response:

I support this issue fully. I have taken part in many protest at Nike town in Chicago. I don’t have time to talk more about this but trust me. Don’t bye Nike. Kids are going to die if Nike keeps going the way they are going. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Nike is being sued for the use of sweatshops in Asia. To be honest, I’ll never wear a pair of Nike’s ever again, they don’t make leather shoes as far as I know.  But, if Rockport (my favorite brand) had the same issue come up about them, I would still buy their shoes.  I really like their shoes, no other shoe compares.  I don’t see why anyone cares who makes them.  The kids are the ones that are working there.  It is by choice. If that is the only place that they can work then they must be in a 3rd world country.  But, being in a 3rd world country, one can usually support themselves with an agrarian type of lifestyle.  I really can’t make myself care.  I wish I could.  Sally Struthers can rot in hell.

Response:

Always remember that the USA  government is the enemy.  The USA government imposes strict limits on how many Chinese may escape from China to live in the USA, where labour standards are enforced.  If any more Chinese arrive, the US officer at the airport will turn them away.  That doesn’t happen often because they cannot even board the plane in China without a visa to enter the USA; the airline is subject to heavy fines in the USA for letting them board in China. Teach your children to hate the U.S. Government, especially the Immigration and Naturalization "Service." Hitler set the house on fire, I.N.S. blocked the fire escape from the outside, killing ten million innocent people.  The I.N.S. is part of the federal government, which is the enemy. I think the issue is less about who makes them but how they are treated while making them. The kids are the ones that are working there.  It is by choice.

You think they have a choice about where they work and how they are treated? Are you blind? If that is the only place that they can work then they must be in a 3rd world country.

True, but why should that be some kind of excuse to treat these kids like slaves?  They have to help support their families, but that shouldn’t mean they should be subjected to terrible work conditions just to earn a measly pay and to help someone thousands of miles away impress their friends with new clothes and shoes. But, being in a 3rd world country, one can usually support themselves with an agrarian type of lifestyle.

And that makes it okay? I really can’t make myself care.  I wish I could.

I wish you would too, but I don’t believe in miracles. Sally Struthers can rot in hell.

I doubt Sally gives a rat’s ass about those kids, but if she does and her little tv ads do any good at all, I support it. JMHO, Jon

I hate to be mean about this but Jecon you are misinformed about the subject. You disgust me. These kids are some times sold by their parents, or kidnapped. They rarely choose to work where they work. Their parents many time force them. These are kids that are 8 years old and they are dying so you can wear some shoes. I have to say that you are what is wrong with the world. You live a life of privilege and you think that it comes out of the blue. Well it doesn’t people are working their asses off for you. These kids have no future. You are a disgrace to the human race you piece of trash. If we were all like you then the world would be in a sad state. I hope you enjoy your life Jecon but if I were you I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night thinking about all the harm I have caused.

Not only do some people wear the "Swoosh" all the time, they even sink so low as to *worship* it. A teen clique called "Whiggers" typically wear Nike and the like (Hilfiger, Adidas, etc.). I myself visited Niketown when I was in San Francisco, and I regret it to this day. They were only worn during a period of a couple days when all my *other* shoes had holes in the heels, and were therefore un-wearable. Suffice it to say, I got new shoes, and my Nike’s are now rotting away in the closet. I refuse to wear the Swoosh. – — Andrew Manore   http://home.earthlink.net/~manorea PGP Keys: 0×6DCD0C33 and 0xF6356BEF "Fogger" on IRC, ICQ and The Palace —–BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE—– Version: PGPfreeware 5.5.5 for non-commercial use <http://www.nai.com Comment: PGP Keys: 0×6DCD0C33 and 0xF6356BEF iQA/AwUBNUKrFggPToxtzQwzEQKILgCeNjH74FuC29iRNmePyOw9BwkqIMgAoKOg ItZC8ReurW9Hx09mgiwgBOp7 =dVfb —–END PGP SIGNATURE—–

I was about to tell him that, but you already did. These are kids that are 8 years old and they are dying so you can wear some shoes. I have to say that you are what is wrong with the world. Well, that’s the end of the intelligent debate, now lets get into name-calling. :) You are a disgrace to the human race you piece of trash. Actually, a lot (if not all) people could be "priveliged". If there were no wars, the labor saved from making weapons could be spent making life better for us. If there were no dictators concerned with depriving their people of everything just to achieve a favorite ideology of theirs (Pol Pot, for example), most people in the so-called Third World would have a better lifestyle. So instead of children making shoes, we could have out-of-work soldiers doing the same thing. –The Vegamite Sandwich
