Arcata, CA FNB Under Attack
Question:
Instead of grandstanding in Arcata the IWW *could* be helping to elect the progressive candidates for Arcata city council this November.
Gee whiz, and, historically, "progressives" have *never* abandoned their constituents. Read a history book and think a little about it. A more progressive city council might very well permit a feeding program with *reasonable* rules of conduct.
Reasonable to the extent that people don’t get fed perhaps? But, in their cynicism, the IWW chooses to encourage others to violate a court order in order to generate publicity. Thanks, IWW.
Yup, that *must* be it. Has nothing to do with principle at all, no siree. Thanks CP/SWP.
Response:
The City of Arcata is Harassing Food Not Bombs Arcata Food Not Bombs reports that on Thursday, October 20, 1994 local authorities served a summons on three volunteers and 100 Does. The City of Arcata is suing Food Not Bombs because it is feeding the hungry without a permit. The group has taken the courageous position of asserting their fundamental right to feed the hungry. They understand that the flipside of getting a permit is losing that permit when the government feels threatened. This is exactly what has happened in San Francisco. The health issue is clearly a scam when you consider that in the hundreds of thousands of free meals served during the past 15 years not one person has ever been made sick from eating at any of the over 60 Food Not Bombs chapters. San Francisco hasn’t even had the nerve to fake a food poisoning. The city is threatening the Arcata volunteers with 5 days in jail and/or a $1000 fine for each count of feeding the hungry. Will the Arcata Police follow San Francisco’s lead and spend an estimated seven million in tax dollars in an effort to prevent the feeding of the poor? Will the leaders of Arcata join Mayor Frank Jordan in being the subject of the United Nations Human Rights Commission’s first investigation into human rights violations in the United States? Will Arcata add its name to the list of cities that outlawed free food distribution to the hungry? So far the list only includes Salt Lake City, Utah plus Santa Monica and San Francisco, both in California. The people of Arcata can help stop the increase in human rights abuse by city governments. Arcata Food Not Bombs is considering serving at Arcata Plaza near 10th and H -Streets at 5 p.m. at night. If you are outraged by these new attacks on our rights, join the volunteers in risking arrest by serving dinner one night. Call Arcata Food Not Bombs at (707) 441-6896 to find out how you can help. The group will be risking arrest on Halloween Day, Monday, October 31, 1994 at a rally being held in solidarity with San Francisco Food Not Bombs on the new opening day of Keith McHenry’s trumped-up "three strikes" felony trial. Arcata Food Not Bombs has its hearing on a Temporary Restraining Order at the Eureka Court House, 5th Street between I and J Streets on Friday, November 4, 1994 at 1:30 p.m. It’s important to pack the court and everyone is encouraged to attend. Witness the insanity of modern America city government firsthand. If we lose the right to share free food, what’s next? ***** –posted by an I.W.W. for: FOOD NOT BOMBS 3145 Geary Blvd. #12, San Francisco CA 94118 (415) 330-5030 *****
