SOCS class 530-Pulled Thread Needlework Necessities (also 130, 134) review

Question:

I usually do not stitch with a very firm tension, so this class was really hard for me.  I’m not sure I’ll do any pulled thread work in the future.

I’m a loose stitcher as well.  And I had miserable results when I first started pulled stitchwork.  (I took a class a couple of years ago at VF-SOCS.)  By the time I got to the end of the sampler, maybe I was tense–maybe even preparing for quals–I was pulling those threads *wicked* tight.  I thought it looked so beautiful.  I went back and removed all the wimpy-tension pulled work from the first go ’round and restitched it.  I have since come to appreciate the results–I took "Sumer is a-cumin in" with Rae Iverson with that great pulled bee among other projects.   I also like that I can stitch these designs when I am tense. Response:

I was pretty exhausted for this class (Friday at 4:00, my third of the day!), but I perked up by the end.  This class was with Linda Reinmiller, who is a splendid teacher.  She made great use of the stitching demonstration contraption (even popping off the elastic pieces where we needed to withdraw threads) and gave *very* clear directions. DH had her also for 130-Potpourri of Stitching Techniques.  DH said she was not so "picky" about a lot of things as we sometimes get here…"stick some masking tape around the edges of your material before you begin to stitch" and such…but he said it was good to get a different view than his 134-Cross Stitch from A-Z with a Tomorrow’s Treasures staff member…*Very* picky about everything.   I usually do not stitch with a very firm tension, so this class was really hard for me.  I’m not sure I’ll do any pulled thread work in the future.  To me, it was worth taking the class for the new technique just to find that out!  The project is lovely, though.  And as I said, Linda is a wonderful teacher (and very helpful when coming around the class as well), so if you want to learn some of these techniques, this is a good class to take!  Also, if you love bright and vibrant colors, you must see some of her work.  She brought a jewelry case she had done to class and it was stunning!  The class project is white on white, though, but also uses some 032 Kreinik #4 braid (which is great to work with!) Also, if you’ve been wanting to learn Nun’s stitch, this is a good class to take. -Heather Lott — *think of something that usually makes you laugh until I come up with a good .sig X/USA/H1+(msl)/-/-/0-allergic:(/2B/TW Wedding Sampler, Cross My Heart 1st Xmas Stocking, Emie Bishop Love Sampler, Dimensions Gold "Mother" Teacup/XHDPR/32L22A/D/ex-P~/OHS/M/B/b+/ad nausem/S/K+/E/L/G+-/W+/msl, Harrison Ford/Robert Asprin/almost anything chocolate
