Kurt Cobain
Question:
is he dead the fifth or eighth of april 1994 ? Thanks from AnnaLisa

Of course it was 1994!

Look at Howard Hughes… and had a kid. Of all the reasons for living, he should have thought about his kid… But I guess he didn’t. Whatta jerk…
Why is it that people assume as if "If *I* were Kurt Corbain, I’d … blah blah blah…". But you’re not. If the man was thinking, he probably wouldn’t have shot himself to begin with (personally I suspect Jeff Gilhooley is involved as Tonya Harding was looking to front Nirvana). Think? I imagine that if I were in the state of mind where I’d be seriously considering suicide, I’d bet "thinking", at least rationally, was the last thing I’d be capable of doing. Yeah, all these know-it-alls can say he’s a jerk, and idiot, etc., as if somehow if they were in his shoes they’d do things much differently. What a crock. 99.9% knew the guy no more than they probably know their local librarian. Yeah, I think Corbain’s suicide was a stupid waste, but to call the guy an idiot for it, etc. as if to assume that they would have done something totally different if it was them is even more thickheaded. Unless you can tell me that you totally understand the guy’s emotional and mental state (something we’ll never probably know), shuddup and talk about something that you do know before we get all self-righteous while talking through our rectums. what we DO know is the moronic stuff that Cobain said before he died… like he hated the fact that teenage girls were buying his albums and lining his fucking pockets with gold… he couldn’t "handle" the trappings of fame, YET THE pluck it out…!!!! if thine fame offends thee… get off the fucking stage… i feel bad about his personal life and how turbulent it was, but i can’t forgive the venom that came spurting out everytime he opened his mouth….. do YOU feel bad that he was famous..? I don’t. I’m sorry Kurt…you wrote few good songs and you became famous… tragic, ain’t it? joe murphy watertown MA

I guess he’s off the fucking stage now. I won’t bother with the stupid Shakespeare "All the world’s…" quote. i feel bad about his personal life and how turbulent it was, but i can’t forgive the venom that came spurting out everytime he opened his mouth….. do YOU feel bad that he was famous..? No, I don’t, but maybe for some reason he did feel bad because he became famous. Or maybe worse, he felt bad because he didn’t enjoy making music anymore, but was obligated to because he was famous, had fans, contracts, etc. You seem to think that Kurt was a sellout and full of shit. Well, maybe you’re right and Kurt suddenly discovered that raving, insensitive jerks like you were right. Maybe he did sellout. He sold the only thing in the world he loved, his music. And other people loved it, especially people who made money from it. And after he sold it, nothing could buy it back. Yeah, so Kurt lamented that his success was empty. That money wasn’t everything. Perhaps this was ‘moronic’ in your estimation, you who are so qualified to judge other men. I’m sure we wouldn’t hear you complain about getting rich off of teenage girls after selling your soul. Undoubtedly, you’d think it was quite a good deal, considering you have no soul to sell. joe murphy watertown MA

Response:
Kind of ironic, isn’t it? Cobain kills himself after complaining about how much he hates fame. As soon as he does, millions of people all over the world spend countless hours debating and mourning a man who didn’t even want them to know he existed (or so he said.) I hope, for his sake, his soul isn’t trapped on Earth and he is forced to see all of this.
Response:
This is to all of you who have nothing better to do than bash Kurt Cobain. I’m not asking you to love him or think he’s great or miss him terribly (even though some of us do.) The point is that he’s dead. Suicide isn’t funny no matter who it is. I think you ought to think about some of the things you’re saying. It’s really said that anyone could find their life to be so miserable that death is more appealing. C
Response:
I’m sure everyone’s heard that Kurt Cobain killed himself. Does anyone know what the note said?
Response:
It’s official everbody. Kurt Cobain is dead. He shot his own head off and left a suicide note. Heard this info on WHFS, a local radio station. Why would he do such a thing? He had the best band in the world, was making mounds of money, and had a kid. later – and i thought after my physics test things couldn’t get any worse…
Response:
Is there any truth to the rumors that are ripping through Seattle currently that Kurt Cobain has committed suicide. A local radio station has reported that Seattle Police have found the body of a mid 20s male, long blonde hair dead on the scene at the Cobain’s house. Seeking the truth
Response:
If it’s not Cobain, then why would Geffen Records/DGC Records release a press statement expressing their sorrow over the loss? There was another release from some entertainment company as well reported on KROQ here in LA a little after one this afternoon. Officially, until the police say it’s Cobain, it can’t be said to be him, but come on folks. A sad day to say the least Nick "All in all is all we are."-Nirvana

[re: Censorship, legal protection of expression, etc] However there are limits that are created by people holding social and/or personal power over others, and that is the sort of limits on freedom of expression I feel you are guilty of.
Yes, but as an avowed outsider to the grand world of "alternative" music, I hold no social power over anyone here, as they most certainly aren’t going to go out of their way to try to please me. I couldn’t possibly hold any personal power over them for I’ve met in person only one person who I’ve EVER seen post to the group, and she certainly has a mind of her own and doesn’t need MY permission to anything. Who is going to post an opinion which might be (for example) vaguely or explicitally feminist if they are going to be called a "Feminist cunt" (to quote one of Draxx’s recent posts on alt.music.nirvana) or be the subject of one of your diatribes?
Perhaps a person who is not afraid of defending his/her position? And as for being called a "feminist cunt", I’ve been called a number of uncharitable (and untrue) things both on USENET and in real life. SO WHAT? If a person can be intimidated by one man typing into his computer thousands of miles away, I’d like to think that problem lies with that persons’ backbone (or lack of same), not with my fingers. You are quite right: censorship is more than a simply legal issue. Your unnoficial censorship is far more insidious.
In a word, bullshit. Dubious analogy at best. I cannot cause physical harm, like a playground bully. And assuming that my adversaries are equipped with a fairly similar ball of grey matter to the one that resides in my cranium, they can fight back effectively. The constitution applies to the United States of America. Freedom of expression exists outside of the U.S.A., usually governed by the laws of other lands. The arguement for free expression and against censorship is not merely a constitutional one. For chissakes’ read and think a little before you try to write, O.K.? It’ll make everyone’s day nicer if we don’t have to waste time holding a "Basic thinking 101" course every time we log on.
While I think that attempts to preserve freedom of expression are both worthy and necessary, and I am personally against censorship, I wonder if you have considered the irony of your rather manic posts. Yourself and draxx, (I realise I might be being unfair lumping the two of you together as a type, but bear with me) seem to me to contribute to a kind of limitation by intimidation of the newsgroups you contribute to. As you so rightly point out, censorship and freedom of expression are not constitutional: my country has no formal constitution, but its citizens still have the right to freedom of speech and expression, under legal limits which are probably more liberal than those of the U.S. However there are limits that are created by people holding social and/or personal power over others, and that is the sort of limits on freedom of expression I feel you are guilty of. Who is going to post an opinion which might be (for example) vaguely or explicitally feminist if they are going to be called a "Feminist cunt" (to quote one of Draxx’s recent posts on alt.music.nirvana) or be the subject of one of your diatribes? Well, at least with rape or beating, there’s only *one* target at a time. And rape and beating are probably tied with censorship for most effective opression strategies. My point being, before you go calling other people losers, step down off your Constitutional high horse and think about your opinions before you come off sounding, well, like a loser.

Response:
When Kurt Cobain commited suicide a few months ago many people were greatly affected. I don’t think I was. They said he was a genius, a voice of our generation. I thought he was just the lead singer/songwriter of a good band. But in the months since, after seeing their "Unplugged" show on MTV for the umpteenth time. I think I finally see and feel the loss. The lasting image that’s imprinted in my head from "Unplugged" was the end of the last song "Where Did You Sleep Last Night." On his last screams he pauses to take a breath before the last syllable/note, looks up from his guitar, opens his blue eyes wide in a breif moment of terror and vulnerability, and returns to his guitar to finish the song. That look, that moment, was the essence of Kurt. Now I’m sorry he’s dead. SIN

Now that his life is over — is he still a generational role model? There were scattered imitaional suicides in Kurts Honor, what’s the point. I would like answers E-Mailed to me. people killed themselves because they were overcome by their own problems, and Kurt just gave those fuckheads an excuse. Kurt is a fucking coward for killing himself. he got a daughter who now is definitely gonna grow up screwed up. a lot of you assholes out there unconciously derive comfort and even pleasure from the fact that he shot his brains out. now you know for sure that his songs were sincere, DON’T YOU? Stop looking at the fact that he shot himself and look at the music. You can’t get inside the head of someone who is clinically depressed. If you could, then you would have all the answers wouldn’t you? Share your elevated thoughts with the rest of us. You must be on a higher plain. People who kill themselves have problems you couldn’t begin to imagine. You can’t dismiss them as fuckheads. That’s the same unfeeling attitude that probably led them to believe there was nothing out there for them in the first place. Let’s hope that if you’re ever staring down the wrong end of a double-barrel someone has enough understanding to help you out of it instead of lecturing you on the "stupidity" of suicide. if it don’t kill you…Geneyus.

In this report I concluded : that he had become a generational role model and that he accieved stardome : through the hard ships the man had faced in his LIFE. Now that his life is : over — is he still a generational role model? There were scattered imitaional : suicides in Kurts Honor, what’s the point. : Chad Takach well, Chad, Kurt Cobain was no role model in the first place even though his songs are great. the reasons WHY he achieved stardom lie in his talent, and a lot of his songs wouldn’t be written if not for his own physical suffering. also, this shit about people killing themselves in Kurt’s honor. Gimme a fucking break. people killed themselves because they were overcome by their own problems, and Kurt just gave those fuckheads an excuse. this is something a lot of potential suicides (myself included once, long ago), is that when you’re gone, the people closest to you aren’t going to be filled with grief, remorse, and guilt. What they will be more than anything is seriously pissed off at you. Is that how you want to be remembered? —

ROME (AP) — Kurt Cobain, lead singer of the Nirvana rock group, was treated at a hospital Friday for an overdose of pills, the Italian news agency ANSA said. The 28-year-old Cobain was in a coma, said ANSA. But the hospital refused to confirm the report and said only that Cobain was transferred to a private clinic.

: AP top stories on Compuserve has Kurt in a coma in Rome. Could it be? It was true… an overdose of tranquilizers washed down with champagne. He was taken to a hospital in Rome, had is stomach pumped and transferred to a private hospital where he has come out of it. (As an aside, I just heard that John Candy died)

Just had to resubscribe to alt.music.alternative to see what these clowns had to say about Kurt Cobain’s "thing". So, here’s what we’re missing by not reading the fascinating posts by these "people". Of course, what else is there to talk about after the "I’m more alternative than you" excitement? (WARNING: if "bad" language will traumatize you, press ‘N’.) Now here is something to get upset about. This is truely a great loss.

Hi everyone. I know Kurt went into a coma from barbituates and champaigne, but just recently I heard he died…truth, or merely stoopid rumour? "I think I’m dumb." "One of these days I’m / / -Nirvana going to cut you into / little pieces" / / / Neil Reilly TIP# 197
