"The 60s"
Question:
as my dad would say…we are only as old as we feel and I feel like Peter Pan! Cutie

i’m an old hippie and i don’t know what to do…should i hang on to the old…or grab on to the new hmmmm Deb – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – any baby boomer old hippies out there? did you turn out as badly as your parents feared? Got in on this thread a little late. I watched the last 1 1/2 hours of the Sixties and frankly I thought it was a little bit trivialized but then I thought about it and that nice tidy happy ending is what really happened in a lot of cases. Parents realized that they still loved their kids no matter what, and then everything was sort of ok again, except for the vets that are screwed up for life…..so maybe that ending was more realistic than hollywood fantasy. at least that is what it was like for me although i gotta admit that those brothers finding their sister at Woodstock was just a little bit goofy suzanne (i too am older then dirt) OCEAN TRIBE (windsurf, surf, skatesail, skate) gold beach/pistol river oregon http://www.angelfire.com/or/oceantribe/index.html

I got on the bus in 1960 and it has been a great ride. Yeah, I’ve had 13 months in psych wards but probably would have anyway. I’ve seen a lot and done more than most folks in a couple of lifetimes. What’s more my kids and their friends think I’m a preety cool dude. As for parents, I remember my conservative school teacher mother asking me if I smoked grass. I said yes and she replied. "Good, I said that you did but your brother and sister said you wouldn’t." Didn’t bother her at all. Anybody see The 60s movie the last few days? What did you think of it? I thought it was pretty good; although it didn’t cover everything, I learned a few things and thought the events were strung together pretty well. Even though the music was out of sequence. (The worst offender was the Graham Nash song — which is a 1971 song!) I’ve seen messages in other NGs which really offer no praise whatsoever to the movie, but I didn’t think it was that bad. I suppose most people on the Internet can and will vehemently voice opposing opinions (sorry, no alliteration intended.) Also, did anyone see Becker last night? How was it? (It’s one of my favorites, but I watched the 60s instead.) bw 8-{)
Response:
I didn’t watch "The 60’s" because I didn’t want to see a very important influential part of my life trivialized. I hope that maybe the show was more than I gave it credit for. The late 60’s and early 70’s shaped my social, cultural, and political points of view. I need to be careful, I’m sounding really old here–sigh. Kate

Even though I work for an NBC affiliate, I’ve got to admit that you didn’t miss much other than some great music (some of which I haven’t heard in years). The events of the sixties were skimmed over so quickly that nothing had any real significance. A mini-series that should have run at least ten to twelve hours but was done in four would leave anyone who DIDN’T live the sixties feeling that it was all trivial and insignificant. I must admit, however, that it brought back some incredibly vivid memories, bith good adn bad. Larry J.
Response:
I didn’t see the show (don’t see many shows), but given that I was born in ‘61, my recollections of the 60’s are more of the ‘Wonder Years’ variety. I do think however that it’s important to open our eyes to where we’ve been –especially through the perspective of others– so that we are always questioning our beliefs. Who we are is made up of our beliefs based on our experience and analysis of same — ALL of our beliefs can’t be ‘right’ . . . we could be doing better for ourselves if we recognize that and change the ones that don’t work. Personally I found the 1860s to be more interesting and stimulating (particularly living in the South). But there were less drugs available. Kate
I did tape the miniseries and plan on viewing it — if I should ever feel nostalgic. James

I like this! Don’t ever let go of your beliefs. Most people sell out for security, and look what a mess the world is.
