WOW! Does eBay really look this shitty to everyone?
Question:
I would really love to know why Firefox crashes every time it calls something from antipopup.virtualrealities.com… Gee. I thought all the MS and IE bashers said the Linux and Firefox were bullet proof.
Perhaps they do. I don’t bash MS and IE. I don’t commit Linux, either.
Response:
Download the Ad Block extension for Firefox and all that crap will go away.
I agree. Aside from very few sneaky web sites, Ad Block can kill most unwanted ads and flash are not downloaded unless you specifically click on the play button. Ad Block can also be used to block inline HTML ad, something that most 3rd party ad blocker can’t do. Firefox + Ad Blocker = worst nightmare for sites trying to milk ad money. — When you hear the toilet flush, and hear the words "uh oh", it’s already too late. - by anonymous Mother in Austin, TX To reply, replace digi.mon with phreaker.net

I would really love to know why Firefox crashes every time it calls something from antipopup.virtualrealities.com. I dunno what it’s calling, but it freezes and folds with that URL in the status bar.
Look for a file called hosts (no file extension) (usually in Windows/System32/drivers/etc), open that with any text editor program and add this to the file: 127.0.0.1 antipopup.virtualrealities.com This way whenever your browser calls for that web site, it’d be redirected to 127.0.0.1 (your own machine) and nothing should happen. I’d also suggest you run spyware program like Spybot or Ad-Ware. — When you hear the toilet flush, and hear the words "uh oh", it’s already too late. - by anonymous Mother in Austin, TX To reply, replace digi.mon with phreaker.net

Did that to stop the sumbitch, and it worked, of course. But there are others, and I expect Firefox to handle them.

Grrrr… I misrecollected. It’s antipopu.unitedvirtualities.com – the bastards who created this abomination: http://www.securitypipeline.com/160401022

You thought wrong, obviously. No one’s ever said they were bulletproof.

You’ll need a specific example. Just the above doesn’t crash anything.

I fired up the old Linux box today and played with that for several hours and surfed eBay with Firefox. I’m not complaining about Firefox or trying to compare it to IE, but found my experience on eBay without all the crap blocked like I have in Windows to be less desirable and slower. Does everyone see and put up with all them freaken advertisements? I’m so amazed that anyone uses eBay with all that trash! The pages load slower because of it. I think I’m going to have to spend some time to configure the browser so I can use eBay running Linux. I really can’t believe people actually put up with all that nonessential crap! It invariably happens at the Rocky Mtn. News, www.insidedenver.com. Antipopup.unitedvirtualities.com is called only the first time I fetch a full-text article. Firefox crashes and I must wait about a minute to re-open it. If I don’t wait long enough, I get some dialogue box about the default user profile being in use.

I know, Rita, but other unpleasant things do. I’ve been very happy with Firefox until the bastards at United Virtualities came along.

I was unable to duplicate this as well; I loaded insidedenver.com without a problem and brought up several articles. However I’m also using a fairly extensive hosts file to block ad server/data mining sites (unitedvirtualities isn’t in it, though). -Bertha — "I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is; I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat or a prostitute." – Rebecca West, 1913

I don’t have any problem with that page, but I did used to have Firefox close abruptly on some of the About.com pages. I don’t know if it has stopped, or if I haven’t been there lately. I think some of my sewing links did it… A

Thanks, Bertha. I surmise that it’s a local configuration error. Have to see what I can tweak in my Firefox.

Setting aside the firefox config responses you got : Web design is also changing. For example, MSN finally centered their content. Up until three weeks ago, their style sheet disregarded resolutions above 800X600 and left aligned the content. Ebay’s main page is still styled content left aligned, even though myebay, search, and auction pages are styled properly. Ebay leaves room for future advertizing as well. You think what you saw is bad, look at the way search pages and the front page for ebaymotors is actually designed. They left room for about 40% or so more advertizing areas on each page (the pages seem pretty full but they use content management software and the tags indicate they have left room for more to be displayed). A year from now… well, you’ll probably be seeing twice as much crap.
