newly diagnosed questions, please help.

Question:

You must make your own decision. I was diagnosed shortly after a bout of Optic Neuritis. L8r…….Any Current Infection? http://community.webtv.net/Hotmoth/MSReflections

Response:

I started this thread, but I am afraid I didn’t completely explain my problem. I am unable to walk without a walker, even then not far. I am completely convinced that I am suffering for a spinal cord injury, in addition to MS symptoms I present with SEVERE symptoms consistant with a lateral lumbar stenosis, BUT my lumbar MRI was negative, (the trauma was almost 5 years ago). I do present MINOR incoordination in my hands. Plus my Neuro spotted lesions in a MRI. With that, the doctors can’t seem to look past MS to explain everything. I would like to walk again and Avonex isn’t likely to help. I am not trying to evade my MS diagnosis, If I could walk on my hands I would leave it at that, and get on with my life. But I need my legs back! Thanks to all, who helped, Jon MsWompa <mswo…@aol.com> wrote in message

Hi again Jon, thanks for the clarification.  You’re right that non of the current tx will give you back your functioning if it is MS.  However, if it is MS there’s always a chance of a remission and some improved functioning, but from what you are saying that isn’t likely.  If you have good insurance and the ABC’s aren’t too costly, what could it hurt.  Yeah there are side effects but it sounds like you don’t a lot of other options? good luck and tell us how you are doing. j j who is really jan, janice or jkl

Hi Jon, I’ve never heard of "Derrick’s syndrome". A brain MRI is a the single best diagnostic aid for MS. Spinal MRIs are apparently very hard to perform and interpret. I have L’Hermittes sign which is apparently caused by a lesion in the neck but they could find it despite finding loads of lesions in the brain. Also muscle weakness and numbness in the legs could be caused by a lesion in the brain as well as in the spinal cord. Stress (both physical and mental) are both well known triggers for MS attacks. Some people think that physical trauma can damage the blood-brain-barrier letting things into the central nervous system that don’t belong there. And of course the enduring mechanical problems with your spine may be causing additional problems. The triple whammy. A lot of people here have reported the first MS attack after some kind of accident. Spinal stenosis should show up on an MRI – a guy here a few months back had his stenosis diagnosed as a result of an MRI and it showed a lot of trapped fluids and narrowing of the spinal column. Get on ABC (Avonex, Betaseron, Copaxone) treatments as soon as you can. A and B are different versions of essentially the same drug whereas C is completely different and has a lot of people on this group have a lot of positive things to say about it. I would evaluate them all before deciding which. They all appear to have about the same efficacy. Anyway, welcome to the group. Shame for why you wound up here, but happy to have you here. Hello all, Seasons greetings! I was diagnosed with MS after a brain MRI showed demyelination evidence. My problem begins, I was in a motorcycle accident about 4.5 years ago. I had immediate numbness and difficulty walking. This progressed until I couldn’t walk at all. (the rest of me is, and was O.K.) I had hopes that this was a Spinal Cord Injury. If I position my spine improperly, to this day, I can still cause pain in the very same place in my lumbar spine. To further complicate matters I have Scoliosis which can make a Lumbar MRI difficult to evaluate. I’ve had my entire central nervous system MRI’d, EMG performed and of course the standard office examination and bloodletting. All of this was inconclusive, After I changed to a general Neurologist closer to home, He made the diagnosis based on only a brain MRI. and poor reflex in my hands. (but they feel fine to me) Of course he had my records from the other hospital. Should I begin the Avonex injection he prescribes? Or see yet another doc. Is it possible to cause MS from an accident? I can give the EXACT moment that this happened. AND I still have the wrecked motorcycle to prove it. Please forgive my rant, my doctors aren’t any help. Except that he mentioned "Derrick’s syndrome" as being exactly the same. Who is that?, I’d like to read more. Thank you, Jon Barnard

Jon, welcome to the group.  I would say most likely not. As you find, MS is an autoimmune disorder.  It could be the stress of the accident sent you into a flare but didn’t cause the MS.  It’s hard to say whether you should start Tx. If another opinion is an option and you don’t feel MS explains you situation… seek another opinion. j

Hi Jon, It is extremely doubtful your accident caused you  contract MS.  The accident might possibly have caused MS in a dormant state to flare UP though. Does your having Scoliosis rule out having a Lumbar Puncture test?  This test usually is used as the definitive guide in diagnosing MS. If you do have MS, it is not the end of the world.  The Avonex your doctor recommends is a valid tool in fighting this disease. It is important to have a good working relationship with your physician. If you aren
