Anti-war Activities at Wesleyan
Question:
In addition to the events listed below, we are setting up plans to have a march in Middletown the day after war breaks out (or the day we get back from vacation) and to have candlelight vigils every night oncee the war is started.
You’re about four months too late. The war broke out in early August.
Response:
We’ve recently become quite active at Wesleyan; first through the Students for Peace in the Gulf and now through the Middletown Coalition for Peace in the Gulf. I’m excited that the antiwar movement here is strong and is growing — we have over 70 people now involved in organizing on various committees. In addition to the events listed below, we are setting up plans to have a march in Middletown the day after war breaks out (or the day we get back from vacation) and to have candlelight vigils every night oncee the war is started. We’re looking into the possibility of coordinating our response to war with other campuses across the country…if anyone is interested, please contact me. Some of us are also interested in doing civil disobedience to show our displeasure with current U.S. policy. If anyone as any information as to actions that are going on in the Northeast, please contact me. What follows is a desciption of what we have done or are going to do in the near future: The Teach-in: Our teach-in on Sat. Dec. 1st was attended by over 300 people and was, by nearly all accounts, a success. At the end, about 70-80 people stayed to form the Middletown Coalition. Vigil the Fri. night: We are planning a vigil on Fri. at 7:00 pm at the local WWII memorial. It’s open to the whole community of Middletown and I fully expect a very large turnout. NATIONAL PHONE ZAP: On Thurs. Dec. 13th, we are going to flood the White House and various other War-related offices with phone call in order to get it through to them that we do not like their handling of the crisis. We are encouraging people to send out postcards to their friends across the country and encouraging them to call Washington on Thurs. The number targeted are (all numbers are area code 202): White House switchboard – 456-1414 Office of Public Affairs – 456-2930 "Comment and Inquiries" – 456-1111 Office of Political Affairs – 456-7730 Office of the Chief of Staff – 456-6797 White House Miltary Office – 456-2150 Office of Correspondence – 456-7610 Office of National Security – 456-2255 Office of Communication – 456-7620 PLEASE spread the word about this!!!! it would be really great if thousands of people from all across the country will call and tell the Bush Administration how they feel about the crisis. (Someone from Wesleyan will have postcards at the Sat. NECAW conference at Brandeis) The Middletown Coalition for Peace in the Gulf phone: Kristina Egan 203/638-0822 John Weathers 203/347-9411 (x3062)
