There, i said it. : I urge all my fellow heterosexuals to join me, and more importantly, : all straight libertarians to step forward with your heads held high : and proclaim your heterosexuality and libertarian essence.  I know, we : straight libertarians are always someone’s easy target, for they know : that we don’t fight back, we don’t protest, fax, call, march, or : boycott.  We simply take it with the smile of a deeper understanding : that most will never know. : All I want is what all straight libertarians want, the same respect : and access to political power that Gays, Democrats, Republicans, : Independents, socialist, KKK, Feminist, Religious types, Militia : members and others of such persuasion now enjoy. : We don’t want SPECIAL rights, just the same rights as non-straight and : no-libertarians have. : I hope that in a small way I will help others, such as myself, to step : forward and admit that they are straight, love the opposite sex, are : libertarian, and want to be full participants in the American Dream : Thank you and God, or Whatever, bless you. : XONA : A STRAIGHT LIBERTARIAN — Xona… I haven’t been laid in 5 years. GREAT USENET PISSCOPS REGISTRY (2/3)

Question:

boycott all of ‘em.  nazis-every single one. thanks for the info durtro

Response:

—–BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE—– Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man’s appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes.                                                      - Abraham Lincoln                     THE GREAT USENET PISSCOPS REGISTRY Last revision date 04/01/97 This registry is comprised of two lists: the first contains companies that have instituted urine or other Human Quality testing, and the second is comprised of companies that do not conduct Human Quality Tests, or that are known to have public policies AGAINST the invasion of privacy that Human Quality Tests constitute. The Registry exists to crusade against the current United State’s government-sponsored misinformation and terrorism designated the War on Drugs. This is about individual privacy and freedom, and is not advocacy of any sort of substance abuse, either legal and illegal. Since drug testing cannot be correlated to impairment what is the point other than snooping. In the light of corporate willingness to assist in the erosion of our personal freedoms, this list maintains a strong plea to boycott the purchase of products from the companies presented in list one. When an employer has the right to invade your body, any further regard of liberty, freedom, and individual choice is merely lip service. HOW TO OBTAIN THE CURRENT REGISTRY A current copy of the Registry will be available via email and usenet every other month. *via email  - a copy of this is sent to the URINE-TEST listserv at *via usenet – a copy of the Registry is sent to:               ALT.ACTIVISM, ALT.ACTIVISM.D, ALT.DRUGS, ALT.DRUGS.CULTURE,               ALT.DRUGS.HARD, ALT.DRUGS.POT, ALT.DRUGS.PSYCHEDELICS,               ALT.DRUGS.USENET, ALT.INDIVIDUALISM, ALT.POLITICS.BUSH,               ALT.POLITICS.CLINTON, ALT.POLITICS.CORRECT,               ALT.POLITICS.ECONOMICS, ALT.POLITICS.LIBERTARIAN,               ALT.POLITICS.MEDIA, ALT.POLITICS.REFORM,               ALT.POLITICS.USA.CONGRESS, ALT.POLITICS.USA.CONSTITUTION,               ALT.POLITICS.USA.MISC, ALT.POLITICS.USA.NEWT-GINGRICH,               ALT.POLITICS.USA.REPUBLICAN, ALT.POLITICS.RADICAL-LEFT,               ALT.PRIVACY, REC.DRUGS.ANNOUNCE, REC.DRUGS.CANNABIS,               REC.DRUGS.MISC, REC.DRUGS.PSYCHEDELIC, TALK.POLITICS,               TALK.POLITICS.DRUGS If you would like to obtain a copy of this list at intervals other than every other month simply send email formatted as in the example below (capital letters are optional): of the message will be dropped. For those who do not have internet access or who desire a hard copy, you may order a copy from by sending whatever you can to cover the cost of printing and mailing to the following address:       Sundance       4275 East Iliff Avenue       Suite 106       Denver, Colorado 80222 USA Better yet, find a friend with an email or other internet account and save us both the hassle and the paper. HOW TO SUBMIT TO THE REGISTRY Companies reported to me will only be "registered" if the submitter has FIRST PERSON experience. In addition, companies that conduct Human Quality Tests other than urine tests should also be registered. For example, if your company has a mandatory medical test and reserves the right to release the results to insurance companies (et al.), you should submit it for addition to the Registry. Said tests are also an invasion of privacy. The identity of all registerers will be protected and all identifying data will be deleted as the list is updated. If you submit a company, please try to provide as much information as possible, particularly the available recourse. As many people are forced to choose between the "lesser" of two evils, knowing what the company does beyond forcing Human Quality Testing is important to inform their consent. For those submissions received via email, I will attempt to acknowledge receipt via email. If you do not receive an acknowledgement, please a duplicate message. To add a company to the Registry, please send a note to the following address:              optional). The body of the message will NOT be deleted. *via post  - Sundance              4275 East Iliff Avenue              Suite 106              Denver, Colorado 80222 USA NOTE: If you think an entry is incorrect, please relay both the correct information. But note that FIRST PERSON experience or information is required in order to both register a company or to have the registration modified. Furthermore, if you are employed by a division of a company listed herein and believe company policy to be different than what is listed, check with your human resources department to verify COMPANY-WIDE policy before asking me to modify an entry. If ANY division of a company is listed as conducting Human Quality Testing, it is presumed that employees in all divisions of that company are at risk and thus the whole company is registered. Again, any corporation which conducts Human Quality Testing ANYWHERE within the company is considered a supporter of Washington misinformation and social terrorism, and thus registered. If you are a corporate executive for a registered company and are upset at seeing your company listed in the Registry, here are the forms of recourse available to you:       a) if the entry is factually incorrect, it will be corrected;       b) if the entry is factually correct, abstain from further testing. In either case, a letter written on official company letterhead containing the corrected information must be sent to the above postal address; emailed information will not suffice. Furthermore, the letter must be dated, and signed with your name and your official title. Otherwise save your energies. REPRINT PERMISSION I hereby grant permission to reproduce the Registry intact anywhere so long as the purpose of the reproduction is to fight against Human Quality Testing or to educate about Human Quality Testing. The Registry may not be reproduced in any manner, by anyone in the employ either direct or indirect of the federal and state governments. Any misuse of this document by federal or state government is strictly prohibited and punishable to the fullest extent of the law. (That’s right, I’ll try to seize YOUR shit.) Credit to the Registry’s publisher (me), information on obtaining updated copies, on submitting to and on modifying entries to this list MUST be retained. SPECIAL THANKS Special thanks are in order to the original compiler of this list, John De Armond. In the revival of this registry, his original one-man crusade is both recognized and appreciated. The anti-DARE community is indebted to his contribution. Also, appreciated is Nicholas Merrill for his Urine-Test listserv, which is provided as a public service by Calyx Internet Access Corp. Question:

I thought that you all would like to see this "call to action" which has been issued by our friend David Oaks.  Looks like we’ll be seeing some new visitors to a.s.a-d -yoav – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – DENDRITE FOLLOW-UP – May 14, 1996 Dear people concerned about human rights in psychiatry: As you may know, the neuroscience community has named this "BRAIN AWARENESS WEEK" (May 12 to 18). And we at Support Coalition have a "BRAIN BOYCOTT" to break the silence that forced psychiatric drugging and electroshock are hurting brains. This humorous/serious message is spreading rapidly via the Internet. One result is that a number of Usenet newsgroups are discussing these issues RIGHT NOW. As you might guess, there are some people defending forced psychiatric drugging, denying that psychiatric procedures can be harmful, etc., etc. YOUR VOICE IS NEEDED — PLEASE PITCH IN! This dialogue is reaching tens of thousands of people. HOW ABOUT WE *ALL* DO THIS, ONCE A WEEK, EVERY WEEK! Alone each of our voices is sometimes ignored — so let’s unite, starting with Brain Awareness Week! Can you pick a newsgroup or two, and "check in" each week, posting something about human rights in psychiatry? Since newsgroup posts last only a week or two, that way there will always be something on Usenet newsgroups, which will reach 100,000’s of people. Here are some newsgroups arranged in clusters according to interest. Please try to dovetail your comments to these newsgroups topics, it’s very important to respect each newsgroup’s purpose and mission:      "MENTAL HEALTH" CLUSTER: The very hottest discussions are, of course, going on with the mental health newsgroups. Topics include "Brain Bank," "Uncivil Liberties," "Ritalin," etc. Here are the newsgroups: alt.society.mental-health, alt.psychology.personality, sci.psychology, alt.support, alt.support.schizophrenia, sci.psychology.misc      NEUROSCIENCE NEWSGROUP: It took a while to get something posted on the very newsgroup that is about neuroscience! But one of YOU changed all that. So check it out and add your two cents, it needs to relate to the topic of neuroscience, exactly: bionet.neuroscience      GENERAL MIND SCIENCE CLUSTER: Meanwhile, there’s a discussion going on in general science groups, regarding the brain boycott, and other relevant topics: sci.med.psychobiology, bionet.sci-resources, sci.med, sci.skeptic, alt.folklore.science      ALTERNATIVE HEALING CLUSTER: There’s a general discussion here — not very extensive, but you can change that! alt.consciousness, misc.health.alternative, talk.politics.medicine, alt.recovery, misc.consumers      FRINGE CLUSTER: You probably know that lots of people on the Internet love "underground" information, such as marginal, speculative conspiracy theories. Well, forced psychiatric procedures are not just speculative, they’re a documented fact of life. Talk about mind control! Your help is needed posting here because someone mistakenly thought the BRAIN BOYCOTT — since it criticized psychiatry — was a "Scientology" project. Of course, the BRAIN BOYCOTT and Support Coalition are totally independent, with zero links to that group. Help speak out! Some of these topics are also for humorous posts and actions only. NOTE: Check out the alt.guinea.pig.conspiracy newsgroup! That title is funny and not used much… it’s a natural one for us!!! See you there! alt.conspiracy, alt.mindcontrol, alt.slack, alt.whine, misc.misc, rec.humor, alt.shenanigans, alt.guinea.pig.conspiracy      WRITING & JOURNALISM CLUSTER: This cluster is on writers, journalism, etc. So please dovetail your post to what writers and editors should know about our issue. "Zines" is about small publications, please be specific to that topic: alt.journalism, alt.journalism.criticism, alt.politics.media, alt.zines     DRUG CLUSTER: The same government that supposedly has a war against drugs, is forcibly drugging people with powerful psychiatric drugs. Perhaps people on some of these newsgroups might be interested in human rights issues: talk.politics.drugs, rec.drugs, alt.psychoactives      POLITICAL CLUSTER: These are fairly well-used newsgroups, so your post may get lost, but it also may be read by a large number of people. You may need to dovetail your post to that *exact* topic (i.e., "sociology"). alt.activism, soc.culture.usa, soc.politics, talk.politics.misc alt.society.resistance, alt.society.revolution, alt.politics.radical-left, sci.sociology      LIBERTY CLUSTER: These groups are very specific to the topic listed. You may want to post a particular post to each list, naming the topic of the newsgroup (That is, include word "anarchism" in your subject and intro for the newsgroup on "anarchism." And post only about a "discrimination" topic in alt.discrimination.) alt.discrimination, alt.society.civil-liberties, alt.society.civil-liberty, alt.politics.reform, soc.rights.human,   talk.politics.libertarian, alt.anarchism      DEPRESSION CLUSTER: This is a good place to post concern about hazards from electroshock, though these are primarily support, so please respect that, and post about helpful alternatives, personal experiences, etc.: soc.support.depression.crisis, soc.support.depression.family, soc.support.depression.manic, soc.support.depression.misc, soc.support.depression.seasonal, soc.support.depression.treatment      YOUTH CLUSTER: Good place to discuss hazards of psychiatric approaches to youth: alt.education.research, alt.education.disabled, k12.ed.special, misc.education, alt.parents-teens, alt.parenting.solutions      MISC. SPECIFIC GROUPS: misc.activism.progressive – This moderated newsgroup isn’t for discussion, apparently. JUST post one specific announcement about human rights, activism, etc. It’s read by a lot of people. misc.writing – This newsgroup asks that people post *only* on topics specific to the business and culture of writers, so please read the list first and dovetail your comment to that subject. alt.support.attn-deficit – If your posting on concerns about Ritalin, this is a good place. Perhaps mix it with the youth newsgroups above. However, prepare for some flames: There are some major Ritalin fans here, who don’t like to hear even legitimate concerns about the drug. talk.bizarre – This is an often-humorous newsgroup. Please read it first, and post a particular (bizarre) message! OKAY EVERYONE, BREAK THE SILENCE!! Remember, EVERY week is BRAIN AWARENESS WEEK, so please check into a favorite newsgroup once a week, and post something on human rights in psychiatry! Apologies if any of the info is not accurate, we’re pretty new to using newsgroups. E-mail your feedback and suggestions. It’s way better to SPEAK OUT NOW, together, and fine tune later. For those of you new to the BRAIN BOYCOTT, and for those who need a reminder: Please phone 1-800-BRAIN-BANK. You’ll be connected to Harvard’s McLean Hospital Brain Bank. Just say, "I join the BRAIN BOYCOTT. I refuse to donate my brain until you speak out about brain damage caused by psychiatry." The intent is to support *true* neuroscience research in the public interest. There’s more BRAIN BOYCOTT info on the below web site. By the way… once in a while in your newsgroup posts, please mention the below web site, and how people can get on the mailing list DENDRITE. This will help interested people stay in touch with each other. <snip of Dendrite "Call to Action" Well, it looks like the internet is maturing as a medium, so it is becoming the battlefield for special interest groups and public relations.  NG trolls are the equivalent of guerilla warriors and snipers in political cyberspace.  I hate to see it and I disagree with this strategy, but I think this newsgroup has focused so much on Ritalin, pro and con, that this sort of thing was inevitable. The Ritalin debate will not go away.  The ADD debate will not go away. There are parallels with the abortion debate that we could learn from. Much of the abortion conflict could have been prevented; unfortunately, neither side would address sufficiently the possibilities of prevention (anathema to the "pro-lifers") and adoption (anathema to the "pro-choicers").  Instead, polarization took place and total war was declared over one method of solving the problem: abortion. The best response, IMHO, is not paranoia and cyberwar but calm discussion.  It is my impression that the ADD question is more important, rather than identifying too closely with a particular medication or course of treatment.   Screaming at one another increases the volume and diminishes the content.  This supports no one. Question:

The path line of many cancel messages forged by Jan isley seem to show that he operates the "agend.atl.ga.us" site as a UUCP connection to Emory University:

That is bagend.atl.ga.us.  Look at the header, fool.  I have a UUCP connection with a few dozen computers.  It happens that the connection to Emory is the faster of the lot. === Partial Path Line of a Typical Jan Isley Cancel Message === : : emory.mathcs.emory.edu (5.65/Emory_mathcs.4.0.18) via UUCP id : AA28073 . . . localhost () by bagend.atl.ga.us : (8.6.12/8.6.9) with SMTP id XAA27080; . . .

Is there any surprise that Jay cannot tell the difference between a Usenet article and e-mail?  Would this explain his persistence in posting e-mail that he has no permission to post?     Further, Isley’s relationship with Emory University is further substantiated by the accounts he uses for his activities against the Internet community:

I have a guest account at Emory because I provide a service to my local Usenet community.  What have *you* done for the Usenet community, Jay?  Besides a history of continuous spamming of off-topic garbage to vast numbers of inappropriate newsgroups, I mean.  And let us not forget your well documented vote fraud. Which brings us to your complaints against Emory.  I use an Emory address to collect votes.  It is simply an alias for my home system.  I use the alias because Emory is on the Internet and I am on a modem.  I also use the alias because the admins at Emory think that what I do is a service to the community. How many people think that what you do is a service? Your solicitation for people to complain to Emory is so bogus for so many reasons it is simply pathetic.  Some would consider it to be criminal harassment. You have complained to Emory many times and their response has always been (1) it is not their problem but (2) prove your point and they will discuss it.      IN EVERY CASE YOUR COMPLAINTS WERE DETERMINED TO      BE COMPLETELY VOID OF MERIT OR TRUTHFUL STATEMENTS      AND THEY ASKED YOU STOP MAILING THEM.     OBjoytish:  Can anyone tell if Jay Stevens’s parents had             any children that lived? OBjayflame: Why would any sane person harass a University             that had one of the most prestigious Law Schools             in the world?  Maybe a death-wish kind of thing?

There are hundreds of computers around here that don’t have this article. In fact, none of the libraries have it, and it isn’t posted on a bulletin board or even tacked to a telephone pole. Not one copy arrived via U.S. Mail, or Federal Express for that matter. UPS and DHL didn’t deliver it, either. The conspiracy runs wide and deep, Steve. Don’t underestimate them. I do want to report all this activity to the proper authorities. What was that case number you cited again? Oh. That’s right. Never mind.

David Lawrence KILLS misc.activism.cannabis

Question:

Follow-ups to misc.test. rave on, in a orgy of followups: The recent newgroup for this group in my name was a forgery. misc.activism.cannabis is widely considered a bogus newsgroup given that it has not been approved by accepted USENET group creation       I don’t read the group but your claim that it is ‘bogus’ is absurd–it’s carried by large numbers of providers and is enjoyed by many.

Which means you don’t understand the USENET newsgroups creation process. Learn it, do it right, and stop making cannabis activists look bad. Hey tale, it is time for all of the cannabis activists to mailbomb the shit out of you, maybe.

Terrible idea. Stop making cannabis activists look bad with such suggestions.       Perhaps calling UUNets major excutives in their home on a Sunday evening would be more appropriate as well as filing complaints with the US Justice Dept.

Pointless, as you’d understand if you had a clue about how USENET works. Get a clue and stop making cannabis activists look bad with such suggestions. misc.activism.cannabis is a bona-fide necessary group.

Then create it properly, via a RFD and voting, rather than making cannabis activists look bad with your ravings. You’re certainly doing the cause more harm than good.     "What’s so funny ’bout peace, love and understanding?" – Nick Lowe             "Her life was saved by rock and roll." — Lou Reed

I really don’t have any fears of a Constitutional Convention.  Some of the attendees may have a secret agenda to pass amendments to eliminate the right to bear arms, but it would still be difficult to convince 38 states to pass the amendment.  Look how the Equal Rights Amendment has failed to pass.  There are enough states out west to prevent any meddling of the Constitution. Not that there’s much wrong with the existing constitution, except that the federal government ignores it pretty much completely, but…        Stop Constitutional Convention With Bumper Sticker Boycott    The Conference of States is a scheme to amputate the United States    Constitution. Concerned citizens can thwart this insidious plot    by pressuring powerful industries to use their lobbying power to    …    to these corporate entities. These corporations are the real Wizard    of Oz pulling the levers of our puppet Government machine.   You are pretty inconsistent here. Why do you want to protect the existing system so much, when in the same paragraph, you claim that this system you want to defend is a "puppet Government machine"? Make up your mind.  Is it a puppet government, in which case, it really needs some serious fixing, or is it a good system which needs to be preserved?    Imagine the impact we would have on the soft drink industry if    patriots across the United States were to unite in a boycott of    Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola, Snapple, Sunkist, Sprite, Gatorade, and    the many other sweet drinks that flood the market!   If the people could organize such a boycott, don’t you think that these astounding organizational skills would pose an equivalent threat — they’d be able to organize a conference of the states, of all things!    Our national boycott would deal a blow to a colossal industry,    thus forcing that industry to comply with the aims of the boycott:    the aim of (shall we say) p~e~r~s~u~a~d~i~n~g that powerful industry    to apply its awesome lobbying power against the United States Or, such a boycott could really hurt the business’s situation, potentially putting lots of peole out of work.  All these unemployed people would go begging for lots of handouts from the government, and the situation which started the call for a convention in the first place would get worse.    Promote this boycott campaign by ordering bumper stickers reading:     "STOP THE ASSASSINS OF OUR CONSTITUTION: CALL 1(800) FREE USA". If you really want to stop the "assassins of our constitution", you need to fight Congress and the President.  They are the ones regularly ignoring the document.  Maybe they aren’t changing it, but why should they bother changing it (which is difficult), when ignoring it is much easier. (Hints: civil forfeiture laws, gutting of the exclusionary rule, federal gun control laws, etc. etc.)    Stop this Conference of States and the Constitutional Convention    before it assassinates your freedom to resist your enslavers. Stop the federal government.  Remind them of the 10th amendment. –D —

Response:

Stop Constitutional Convention With Bumper Sticker Boycott The Conference of States is a scheme to amputate the United States Constitution. Concerned citizens can thwart this insidious plot by pressuring powerful industries to use their lobbying power to stop this Conference of States and its attendant Constitutional Convention which would sound the death knell for our free society. Weapons exist around us — weapons that we use every day, but which we never perceive as weapons.  MONEY is a weapon, folks! The millions of dollars, the billions of dollars that we pay to these corporate entities. These corporations are the real Wizard of Oz pulling the levers of our puppet Government machine.   The People of the United States enrich and empower countless industries with their purchases of candy bars, cookies, sodas, beer, snack junk-foods, etc. Just single out one of those industries, as an example. Imagine the impact we would have on the soft drink industry if patriots across the United States were to unite in a boycott of Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola, Snapple, Sunkist, Sprite, Gatorade, and the many other sweet drinks that flood the market!   What would American consumers drink as a substitute? The answer is simple; it’s cheaper; it’s much healthier; and it will help to defend your Constitutional freedoms:   Take out your blender, add some water to it, and cut up and blend   oranges, or apples, or cherries, or bananas with oranges, or   grapefruits and raisins — you’ll discover a new way of drinking   and enjoying it more while you savor the thrill of victory over   the forces who aim to subjugate you and those innocent children   of yours. Our national boycott would deal a blow to a colossal industry, thus forcing that industry to comply with the aims of the boycott: the aim of (shall we say) p~e~r~s~u~a~d~i~n~g that powerful industry to apply its awesome lobbying power against the United States Congress and the White House, to compel these political stooges of the New World Order to cease and desist from their insidious plot to overthrow our United States Constitution, and to betray our children into a lifetime of subjugation. Promote this boycott campaign by ordering bumper stickers reading:  "STOP THE ASSASSINS OF OUR CONSTITUTION: CALL 1(800) FREE USA". Stop this Conference of States and the Constitutional Convention before it assassinates your freedom to resist your enslavers.                     John DiNardo

ANTI-PROP187 MOVEMELIT ALONG CLASS AND NATION LINES

Question:

* *  The Maoist Internationalist Movement  * *      -    MIM Notes 97 February 1995    - ANTI-187 MOVEMENT SPLIT ON CLASS AND NATIONAL LINES Proposition 187, which would prevent illegal immigrants from receiving social and health services and ban their children from public education, sparked one of the largest mass movements in southern California since the Chicano Power movement in the late ’60s. Latin American and Asian nationals recognized that the proposition would directly affect them and encourage more open Amerikan chauvinism, and demonstrated their opposition. Earlier articles in MIM Notes exposed the bought- off Amerikan working class’ support for the Proposition. Some of the same chauvinism and defense of privilege was at the base of some of the most visible anti-187 organizing. THE OCTOBER 16TH RALLY On Sunday, October 16th, between 70,000 and 100,000 people marched in Los Angeles against Proposition 187. The principal sponsors of the march were bourgeois liberals associated with the Democratic candidate for Governor, Kathleen Brown. As a result, much of the rally remained within the dominant liberal discourse, which "acknowledges" that "illegal immigration is a problem," but thinks that Proposition 187 is too harsh or just not effective (in place of Proposition 187, Brown proposed beefing up the border patrol). Comments like "This proposition is not against the illegal [immigrant], it’s against children," were common.(1) Despite its integrationist liberal leadership, the rally had a very nationalist flavor. Many different flags were flown (mainly Mexican and Salvadoran), and Filipino and Korean groups turned out to protest the immigrant-bashing associated with Proposition 187. Many slogans and posters were aimed at exposing settler hypocrisy, such as the T-shirts with a picture of a Mayan saying, "Who’s the illegal immigrant, pilgrim?" These protesters recognized that 187 *is* aimed at immigrants and oppressed nationalities. Sure 187 would directly affect children – but whose children? STUDENT ACTIVISM In the weeks before and after the November election, thousands of Los Angeles middle-and high-school students boycotted classes in protest of the pro-187 campaign. The boycotts were fueled by immigrant-bashing in the media and the fact that many of the students and their schoolmates would be forced by Proposition 187 to leave school. Some teachers joined in the students’ boycotts, but schools’ response was mixed – some opened their auditorium to teach ins, while others immediately suspended those who walked out.(1) Many of the small, peaceful marches staged by students were harassed by the police. Four hundred students from Birmingham High marched to the Van Nuys Civic center, where the police met them "clad in riot gear, some wielding shotguns and carrying cartridges with rubber bullets." One student said, "All those weapons! We’ve got signs, like we’re really going to hurt them with signs." Another student added, "Freedom of speech is supposed to mean you can say what you want to say. [The cops are] treating us like animals. We ain’t animals."(1) CONTINUING REFORMISM Many of the liberal integrationist organizers of anti-187 rallies have repeatedly spoken against the masses’ activism and obvious nationalism. For example, they distanced themselves from the student boycotts and criticized the masses for waving Mexican flags instead of Amerikan flags at the largest anti-187 rally, saying it alienated the majority of Amerikans. "Some people felt that the more visible we are, the more difficult it will be to beat this initiative."(1) Of course, given the fact that the settler majority see their privileged status threatened by "too much" immigration, they had a point. "I see a lot of Mexican flags, I see a lot of Spanish writing, and I don’t like it," said one woman who was convinced to vote for Proposition 187 after seeing the October 16th rally. "Any time they’re flying Mexican flags, it helps us," said Alan C. Nelson, co-author of Proposition 187.(1) Some organizers also denounced a boycott of companies which had supported pro-187 gubernatorial candidate Pete Wilson. While MIM does not spend its time organizing boycotts, we do find the reasons these groups give in opposition to the boycotts to be telling. For example, the co-director of Hermandad Mexicana Nacional said, "In seeking to respond to proposition 187, organizations have to focus their attention on launching citizenship projects… to encourage Latinos to come forward and adopt the United States as their permanent home."(1) MIM holds no illusions about electoral or integrationist struggles. MIM believes that decades of super-exploitation have created privileges for the majority of Amerikans which leaves them ill-disposed towards revolutionary internationalist struggles. But the majority of the world’s population – including those from oppressed nations who are now immigrating to the United States in search of jobs – do have an interest in revolution. Amerika owes the oppressed nations of the world – in other words, the majority of the world’s people – reparations for centuries of massive super- exploitation. The only way this will happen is through revolution. NOTES: 1. Los Angeles Times, 11/16/94. 2. LA Times, 10/18/94. 3. LA Times, 10/17/94. 4. LA Times, 11/5/94. 5. LA Times, 10/25/94. - Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Obviously you know nothing about california or its economy. Don’t u know tha t the undocumented workers get plenty of taxes taken out of their pay.  But these people never get to see a dime of their social secutity.  My grandfather worked in the brazero program  That was a u.s. program where imigrant workers from Mexico would come during the harvest season and work for less than minimum wage.  Although he workd all his life. and even though they took plenty of taxes from his wages. Th e U.S government did not want to pay back any of his social security. In LA if you go intoany fancy restaurant of/ or any fancy home you will see one of these undocumented workers.  If you travel north to the California farm country here too you will see many workers many of which are undocumented  Now what are you Good U.S. citizens saying .  That these hard working people are good enough to pick your produce in sub-standard condituions.  That they are good enough to watch your children. that they are good enough to clean your house, or prepare your meals . But they are not good enough to attend your schools or recieve medical attention.  Do you know what Mr. W.Va. if you don’t want imigrant in this country why don’t you and all your good U.S. citixen friends come down to Califas and pick our deliciouse table grapes while breathing poisonous pesticides for less that the minimum wage, that os if you recieve pay at all. While your at it why don’t you burn down the statue of liberyt You know the one that says "give us your tired helpless and week." Mixtin1 PS. to your family first argument "Those Mexicans" are my family.

Your comments are excellent for revealling the hypocrisy of the poster’s statements, but you must admit he is consistent.  There is a long historical precedent of priviledged people maintaining that the people who are good enough to do their dirtyest jobs are not good enough to go to reap the benefits of that labor. Your comments about the statue of liberty are also apt.  MIM does not use the term "America" in its writing because "America" is a lie.  What in fact exists in the Amerikan nation, built on stolen land with stolen labor, that continues national oppression of the Third World, its members, and internal nations. — ## ##  ###  ## ##    MAOIST INTERNATIONALIST MOVEMENT # # #   #   # # #    P.O.      I my stand alone, but I feel that there comes a time when you have to take care of "family" first!  The U.S. is not responsible for nobody else but the U.S.!  I grew up very poor in W.Va., I we were always told that the government wished it could do more, but had no money. Then I found out that non-citizens in C.A. are recieving more funding than I did as a U.S.A citizen!!!!  Mexico should help these people, for they are Mexican citizens, and are paying very few tax dollars to the U.S.  Charity begins at home.  We have somehow gotten the notion in this country that the government has the huge pile of money that can never run out: well, we are wrong!  Fix the problems here before we even think about starting to fix problems around the world.

Wider dissemination of news

Question:

People who post news items to misc.activism.progressive and ACTIV-L should consider posting the items to other relevant newsgroups and mailing lists as well. For example, an item about a travel boycott against a particular state or country (or a warning that travel to a particular destination is unsafe) should also be posted to rec.travel and perhaps to an appropriate soc.culture.* newsgroup. Information likely to be of particular interest to the African-American community should be posted to soc.culture.african.american. Some material dealing with military policy and veterans affairs can be posted to soc.veterans or sci.military. Health policy items can go in talk.politics.medicine. And news about a railroad strike or lockout anywhere in the world can be posted to rec.railroad. Similar, material about or from workers at a telephone company can go to comp.dcom.telecom. My point is that activist news is of interest to more people than just the activist community. If you have information about the exploitation of child labor somewhere and you post about it in misc.kids, you’ll be able to reach an audience that doesn’t read the activist newsgroups but which might be willing to boycott the products of child labor and to write letters opposing the use of child labor, once they learn about the issue. Activists have a duty to reach out to the broader community, and Usenet newsgroups provide a means for the outreach. — — Canada Remote Systems – Toronto, Ontario 416-629-7000/629-7044

People who post news items to misc.activism.progressive and ACTIV-L should consider posting the items to other relevant newsgroups and mailing lists as well.

=o= It is a good idea to cross-post items to those newsgroup, both to save network resources and as a courtesy to people who would otherwise have to read the same item once in each newsgroup. =o= And when cross-posting, make sure that followups go only to newsgroup or newsgroup(s) where discussion of the item is relevant.  This is done with the "Followup-to:" header field, as in this example:     Newsgroups: misc.activism.progressive,talk.environment     Followup-to: talk.environment This will also help to discourage folks from sending spurious articles to m.a.p’s moderator. =o= Two other guidelines to bear in mind:   (1) A "*.misc" group (e.g. talk.politics.misc) doesn’t mean       "cross-post anything miscelleneous here," it means "post       things here which don’t already have a newsgroup."  It       is generally not a good idea to cross-post to it.   (2) The "alt.activism.d" newsgroup has been created for       discussion of activism (as opposed to the distribution       of resources for activists, which m.a.p and alt.activism       or for).  If you expect discussion to be about activism       _per_se_, set followups to use or include alt.activism.d. Activists have a duty to reach out to the broader community, and Usenet newsgroups provide a means for the outreach.

=o= Absolutely.  Also, bear in mind that to fully realize the potential of the Usenet for these purposes, we need to combine the geographical dispersal of on-line activism with the outreach of off-line activism.  Do what you can to make your articles useful off-line, so that activists at the receiving end can get them to the grassroots.     <_Jym_

Irish Bank Boycott

CFV: misc.activism.general moderated

Question:

}The call for votes for misc.activism.general has now been issued. }This proposal is wrong for three reasons: … }Please send the line "I vote AGAINST misc.activism.general" to

If I understand Glenn Stone’s post correctly, the people who issued the call for votes in misc.activism.general have responded to someone’s no vote with an explanation of why they think a no vote is "misguided".  I consider this a breach of protocol in the voting process.  It is yet another reason to vote against this group. —- Greg Kuperberg

Response:

This is the first Call For Votes for the creation of misc.activism.general.

First, I apologize for such a wide cross post but I feel that this CFV is of interest to everyone who considers themselves to be politically active regardless of their personal agenda.  Follow ups are directed to news.groups.  Please double check your Newsgroups: line before following up.   As has already been noted in news.groups, Harel and company have chosen to ignore an overwhelming call to name this group more honestly.  Further, they now appear to be attempting to influence the vote by selectively posting the call for votes. | Newsgroups: | news.announce.newgroups,news.groups,alt.activism,soc.rights.human, | soc.culture.latin-america,soc.motss,talk.environment All of these are groups that might contain a large population sympathetic the causes noted to be on the proposed group’s agenda.  That’s fine, I have no objection to such a news group.  But I hope that those who have not followed the discussion in news.groups will carefully read the call for votes and realize that what is being proposed is by no stretch of the imagination a group for "general" activism, and that naming it misc.activism.general is at best, unclear and at worst, fraudulent. Further, this call for votes has specifically excluded numerous news groups that  include a lot of people who have a clear interest in activism but who – in my view – might object to the idea of a group called "misc.activism.general" that permits only activists who agree with the narrow agenda of the moderators to participate. I urge everyone with an interest in activism to carefully read this call for votes and consider whether you agree that it is _not_ appropriate to name such a group "misc.activism.general". Thanks for your time. "Don’t drive too slowly."                 Richard Caldwell                                           AT&T Network Systems                                           att!cbema!nrc

Response:

This is the first Call For Votes for the creation of misc.activism.general. The purpose and description of the group is included below, including information on how to receive sample resources and articles from the ACTIV-L archiver. The voting period will last now through (and including) 10 April. [Mnemonic: That's TEN-FIVE-ONE-"for"-w[onderful new group] A valid vote must contain one of:         I vote FOR misc.activism.general or         I vote AGAINST misc.activism.general [It's not necessary to have the exact strings, just to be unambiguous, e.g. "I would vote for m.a.g. if..." counts as a comment, not a vote.]     NOTE: This is NOT a "talk" group — please see New Newsgroup           Proposal which immediately follows the note below. [The New Newsgroup Proposal for  misc.activism.general -- which we encourage everyone to read fully -- follows this note from Gary Trujillo about the choice of ".general" in the name:]    The reason we have chosen the name "misc.activism.general" for the    new newsgroup is that we are hoping that there will be a natural    evolution of the newsgroup in the direction of having separate    categories for each of several subject areas dealing with activist    concerns.  We might imagine a future in which we have:         misc.activism.centralam         misc.activism.ecology         misc.activism.mid-east         etc.    At the point at which misc.activism contains a number of such    categories, the "misc.activism.general" newsgroup would become a    "catch-all" for information that doesn’t fit neatly into any of    the other categories.  We have chosen to not immediately press for    the creation of such subcategories in order to start off as simply    as possible, and to see how things work.  - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - –                         New Newsgroup Proposal NAME: misc.activism.general STATUS: Moderated MODERATORS:       [PEPINSKY%IUBACS.bitnet], Gary Trujillo, P u r p o s e : Misc.activism.general would provide news, information, and resources of interest to activists and anyone interested in promoting peace; economic, legal, and social justice and equality; a clean environment and safe workplace; democratic control over domestic and foreign policy, and other issues of concern to the progressive community. This group would be an outgrowth of the Activists Mailing List (AML), established a working relationship with PeaceNet, an electronic network linking hundreds of peace groups around the world, as well as individually with such groups and organizations as the Latin America Data Base (Latin American Institute, New Mex.) ACTIV-L now reaches many hundreds of readers, regularly forwards to the UseNet, and its volume now averages over 20 posts/mailing per day, beyond what can comfortably be handled and read in people’s email boxes. In what ways would misc.activism.general be different from alt.activism? —  First, it would not be an "alt" group, and hence enjoy wider distribution; —  Second, it would be moderated, and thus avoid the high noise/information ratio often found in alt.activism, while leaving that group available for discussion;      Misc.activism.general is not for political discussion, although we welcome inquiries and requests for information and references, announcements of local activist organizing (see below), etc.; we are also considering a forum for the discussion of specific activist strategies, support for activists, and so on.; — Thirdly and crucially, the group will make use of ACTIV-L’s contacts, and will serve as a bridge between the UseNet on the one hand, and PeaceNet and other networks and mailing lists, and various national and grass-roots progressive organizations and peace groups on the other.  Misc.activism.general will serve as a source of news, information, contacts, and resources for activists and concerned citizens. —  We also plan on making contacts with alternative publications such as the Nation, FAIR’s EXTRA!, In These Times, etc, to regularly forward information from these sources; and we have already begun making contact with the Network of the Alternative Student Press (NASP) and New Libera- tion News Service (NLNS) with whom we hope to work to make information and resources available to tens of thousands of student activists across the country, and to facilitate communication and cooperation between them. — In conjunction with misc.activism.general, the ACTIV-L archiver would allow any reader to send the appropriate command to the LIST-SERVER in order to receive by mail many of the articles and resource-files posted to misc.activism.general, and to receive indices of what’s available. What would be posted to misc.activism.general? Many ACTIV-L bulletins have already been forwarded to alt.activism; usually these come from PeaceNet-based groups, and from AML resource files. Examples of both are listed below, with information on how to receive samples from the archiver. Other types of posts will include regular Calendars of events, talks, marches, etc, from listings in the alternative press and from the group’s readers about their local organizing efforts; this information will be made available to misc.activism.general readers and ACTIV-L subscribers, as well as to PeaceNet and its sister networks around the globe. As the quantity and diversity of news and resources available through the group expand, we envision a network of misc.activism.* groups tailored, again, to providing activists with support and resources to enhance their effectiveness. For example, misc.activism.events could provide a forum for readers to find out about and post regarding local and national organizing, speakers, teach-ins, and so on. A misc.activism.support could provide a forum for activists to request specific information/references, contacts, advice, or other assistance. Some examples of regular misc.activism.general posts from different organizations: — National Campaign for Peace in the Middle East — Greenpeace action/alerts and environmental news updates. — SANE/Freeze legislative updates and newsletters — Regular issues of _Central America Update_ (From the Latin America Data Base, Latin American Institute, University of New Mexico), to which ACTIV-L has an institutional subscription. — Witness For Peace, Amnesty International, and other human rights groups’ reports and alerts. — Reports from media watchdog groups such as Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR) — Legislative alerts and updates on topics such as covert actions and other areas of governmental secrecy or abuse from the Christic Institute and other sources.  - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – A central aspect of misc.activism’s resource-sharing strategy is its networked database.  Many hundreds of articles from the above sources are already online and retrievable by mail from the ACTIV-L listserv archiver.  Listserv implements a comprehensive set of database functions which allow networkers to search for and retrieve articles of interest.  For a quick tutorial on accessing ACTIV-L’s database, mail the command (1-line message): GET AMLDBASE DOC ACTIV-L For a quick sampling of some of the files online, mail the following commands to the listserver: GET CENSORED PROJ1989 ACTIV-L GET PUBLIC DIPLOMCY ACTIV-L GET COINTPRO CISPES ACTIV-L other files include: CONTRA   TERROR      An account of atrocities AMNESTY CATALG90     The entire A.I. 1990 Human Rights Catalog OXFAM84  NICARAG     1984 Oxfam bulletin on Nicaragua FSLN     ACHIEVE     Achievements of the revolution in Nicaragua CIA      BOOKLIST    Books on the CIA with short descriptions REPRESS  BOOKLIST    Books on political repression/subversion  - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – Examples of periodically posted resource files are given below; these are regularly updated (with help from readers) and will be available any time from the archiver:  - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – —  "groups" Lists names, addresses, telephone numbers, often brief description, and sometimes extensive excerpts from various peace groups.
