Many people rallied around the club, called the mall, local reps, etc. But the hero of the year is Alan Fong of State Farm Insurance in Kailua who offered a drastically reduced premium for the insurance. So, the club is safe for a year. Reminder: All are welcome. The club is free. It meets on Weds from 6 to 9 pm. Free coaching at 7pm. Also chess clubs also meet at other malls around Oahu.

It’s a long story, but the school and the property are owned by an estate. The Windward Mall Chess Club learned last week that it must buy insurance and that its sessions would be canceled until a policy is in place. However, the mall did allow the club one last meeting on Wednesday to inform players of the situation. The club, like vendors and other groups that hold activities there, is required to purchase insurance against possible lawsuits stemming from its activities, according to the mall manager. But the short notice and large amount of insurance needed surprised organizers and the Hawaii Chess Federation. The club is free and open to all. All ages are welcome and many kids have learned the game and play regularly and even participate in tournaments. Moreover, Weds nights were expanded into a night for kids with entertainers, crafts, etc. However, now the Mall is under new management and they have decided to "evict" the club for some insurance-related reason. Please the the Mall management [235-1143] and ask them to reconsider. The activism can be worldwide — the area code here is 808.
