The damage a person does to the planet has little to do with what sort of clothes he or she wears. Mostly it’s a function of how much he or she consumes in general. We might think of overpopulated Third-World countries as cesspools of squalor and ecological catastrophe—and they are—but the fact remains that the average baby born in the United States will consume as many resources and generate as much pollution over his/her lifetime as 30 average babies born in India. Really, the worst things a person can do for the planet are: 1. Be comfortable 2. Reproduce It’s fashionable for pseudo-environmentalists to focus on token issues such as the fur trade or genetically modified foods as a way to avoid having to confront the real issues and make any real sacrifices. A real environmentalist would, at a minimum, stop driving cars, and use only enough artificial heat in the winter to keep the water pipes from freezing. Anything less than that is merely window-dressing. — the Danimal

Dunno – ain’t never been a single father. Of the single dads I know of, precious few seem to be in search of a "sensitive woman". >I was watching a group of women debating on television. They >were complaining about people who think that having a child >makes you a better person.

"Better" than what, one wonders. >I wonder how many women out there think that a man with a >child is somehow better than a man without a child because >he has a child.

Depends; I know a few single moms that tend towards men that’ve had children based on the sometimes-true notion that such men will be able to deal with their children as well. Single women without children seem to tend to not care much one way or the other, IME, save that some might think that a man that’s able to care/provide for a child might be able to care/provide for a woman in somewhat the same fashion. Most of the childless females I know don’t really believe that though. >I don’t need to have a child in order to be a better man.

I don’t think I’d be all that better either, but it’s hard to tell since I haven’t the experience. >And I don’t think a woman is a better woman just because she has >a child.

Depends on whatchyer lookin’ for. >http://newyorkmetro.com/nymetro/nightlife/sex/columns/mating/10638/ >
[...] >The hottest guy in the park is not the slender flappy-haired emo >with the Martin guitar but the slender flappy-haired emo with >the Maclaren stroller. >
Sure, it can be shipped in a ENVELOPE with one stamp on it for .37. But then when you don’t get it, would you prefer to be out the $10?
I dunno.
I purchased this ebay item for $9.38 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3933676490 I think $3.95 shipping and insurance is theft when it can be mailed for 37 cents. The seller FRANKCOINS refused to reduce the shipping to a fair amount. Just wanted to warn everyone.

It doesn’t appear that the shipping fee was a secret when you bid… if you had a problem with it, you should have bid accordingly and/or tried to work something out AHEAD of time. You have absolutely no business winning an auction and then inventing your own terms. The seller is reasonable, and it sounds like you are being a nightmare bidder! mjoann

The shipping cost is clearly stated as a flat rate, along with an offer of $1 for each additional item. Assuming a handling fee and some good packaging, and considering the seller’s outstanding feedback, I’d say you’re overstating your case. He looks like a good seller to me, with a modest S&H charge. Perhaps he could include the word "handling" in his listing to be entirely square, but I don’t see a problem, certainly not "theft."

or better my position as a supervisor.

So sorry HappyPolarbear. Oh well what a nice society there is no room for mentall ill people like me, cause that’s how I feel like right now. Why do I have to be BP? There goes me feeling stable for two weeks, having finally gotten some hope that with meds I can get better and can return to work and have a normal life…. puffff all this is gone. now. I want to go in my bed and hide under covers and cry and cry…

There will be more opportunities. I know that Nancy doesn’t agree with me, but personally I wouldn’t tell an employer that you are bipolar. They can always find some excuse not to employ you.

Response:

First, you have nothing to feel guilty over. As for regrets…well, I can’t tell you how often I’ve cursed this rotten "disorder". That phrase sounds way too mild, to tell you the truth. "Disorder", sounds like something that is a mild inconvenience instead of something that can destroy lives. Right now, however, is not the time to kick yourself. I don’t know if you have any legal options. But I doubt that you did the wrong thing telling your boss what was wrong with you. I’m betting that he would have hired a permanent replacement if he hadn’t known exactly what was wrong. Management hates uncertainty, and doesn’t like having positions filled temporarily. You did what you had to do. You’re in survivial mode right now, fighting to get healthy. That is your only really important priority. Seriously. Jobs come and go, but your life, your physical and mental health, your family, all depend on you getting better. Most bipolar people are able to work at productive jobs. Sometimes compromises have to be made, though. Hang in there. You are getting better. You will have a "normal" life (whatever that means – look around – there are a lot of different types of "normal"). You can deal with this. And keep in mind that there are two types of emotional disturbance for bp’ers. There is the mood-disorder induced stuff, and there are "real" emotions resulting from outside stimuli. Don’t assume that the real disappointment/anger you are feeling will set you back emotionally. It all really depends on how you respond to it. You can give up and decide that you are a failure, or you can decide that you are going to fight to regain your equilibrium and show that idiot that you can go back to work and be as good an employee as you were before. If you can quit smoking and stay quit in the middle of all this, I’m betting that you have what it takes to do the latter. I read something in a bipolar journal shortly after I was diagnosed. They were talking about activism, and they commented that the most important thing a bp’er who wanted to set a good example could do was to get and stay as stable as possible, to set an example. I’ve always remembered that. You can show your boss that you are as good as before. But first you have to get stable. You’ve been on a rough ride, but you are doing really well. Hang in there. Diane

Many people rallied around the club, called the mall, local reps, etc. But the hero of the year is Alan Fong of State Farm Insurance in Kailua who offered a drastically reduced premium for the insurance. So, the club is safe for a year. Reminder: All are welcome. The club is free. It meets on Weds from 6 to 9 pm. Free coaching at 7pm. Also chess clubs also meet at other malls around Oahu.

In my case, I started out "worrying" about my own pecker when I realized that it wasn’t all there. Someone had cut part off without my assent! The ethical breach is obvious, but it is understandably hard for a circumcised man to accept it. Much easier to suppose it’s nothing to worry about.

they fight for their lives against a well-broadcast program of genocide as described in the works of theodore herzl. They fight virtually unarmed against a nation armed with modern weaponry. They fight even though their enemies have dressed up in headscarves and attacked non-arab populations to destroy their credibility. The land they stand on is theirs… by man’s law (the united nations partition of canaan) and god’s law (Deut. 23:23 That which is gone out of thy lip thou shalt keep and perform) Israel acknowledged the partition of the canaan region and the u.n. charter which forbids wars of conquest. There is NO SUCH THING IN INTERNATIONAL LAW as a victory fief. Israel has pledged adherance to international law. Therefore… they are in violation of the laws of God and the Judaic peoples… the mitzvot of which (that which is gone out of thy lips thou shalt keep and perform.) by occupying the partition of the canaan region which the U.N. gave to the arab peoples. On today, America’s independence day. Speak out against the murdering, raping, atrocity committing, child-killing, prisoner raping, civilian sniping, dressing as suicide bombers, state of israel and take their goods, their chattel, and their support by ANY LEGAL OR EXTRA-LEGAL MEANS AVAILABLE TO YOU. NAZIS MUST DIE! EVEN ONES WEARING STARS OF DAVID INSTEAD OF SWASTIKAS ON THEIR ARMS. solemnly, Doc

There is NO SUCH THING IN INTERNATIONAL LAW

Oh yeah? Just try disobeying the law of gravity. I drop a 1983 cent in the brown ark. It makes the sound you would expect when it lands on the other coins in the bank. Tian — http://tian.greens.org/ Today I went to Day On The Medow in San Jose. I spent considerable time talking to a nice young woman named Tamar who is convinced dogs deserve better. She watched the fireworks with me at the end of a day of activism.

I gather that if Justice X holds informed views about legal issue Y, and explains those views at event Z, then Justice X must forever recuse himself / herself from any cases about, or touching on, issue Y. Yes?

Of course, except that SC Justice Scalia has set precedent otherwise. "Quack! Quack!" — Gary

Response:

done, the Supreme Court vote would have been four to three to allow a complete audit of ALL the disputed Florida ballots, which would almost certainly have given us a verified Gore presidency.

This claim is very certainly false, because there were recounts of all the ballots, done by the New York Times and a cast of many, who took advantage of the ballots being public documents. The count you were asking for of the ballots was made, with an open audit, and it did not give the result you are claiming it would. This claim surfaces here on a fairly regular basis, and it was not true any of the other times either. By almost all of a very wide range of standards, Bush–who I do not like at all as a President–did indeed win the Florida vote. Indeed, while you will have to do a web search for it, there is on the web a javascript program with the data that lets you see the margins (all teeny tiny) by which Bush won. The link is bookmarked on my other machine, so you will have to find it for yourself. It does appear that if you made the strictest possible interpretation that Bush’s attorneys wanted, and no one else supported, that there is a narrow range of legal interpretation under which Gore might have won. Never forget: Gore WON THE POPULAR VOTE decisively. Bush LOST THE POPULAR VOTE

This is a totally meaningless statement, because the President of the United States is selected by the electors chosen by the 50 states using methods chosen by their state legislatures. We almost had an even more recherche example of the actual wording of the constitution on this topic, but fortunately for the news readers who would have had to explain it we dodged that bullet. by at least a million ballots. Come back and talk to us about Justice Marshall’s "judicial integrity and impartiality" when you’ve dealt with the reprehensible behavior of Scalia and Thomas on this far more important issue.

Her position was predetermined and consequently she discounted all evidence presented by those opposed to homosexual marriage. That’s intolerable. She should be impeached and jailed.

…and we’re all confident that you’d be just as outraged about this "activism" had the decision gone the other way.

Response:

Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Margaret Marshall, the prime mover behind the same-sex marriage ruling and author of the official decision, appears to have seriously violated the Massachusetts Code of Judicial Conduct. She was the keynote speaker at a fundraiser for a major homosexual legal advocacy group prior to hearing the Goodridge case. At that event she publicly advocated for extensions of homosexual rights.
How exactly did she violate the Code? Did she, for example, know any of the plaintiffs personally? Did she have a financial interest in the outcome of the case? What part of the code is she supposed to have violated? If you can’t point out the section of the code you allege she violated, then STFU.

Her position was predetermined and consequently she discounted all evidence presented by those opposed to homosexual marriage. That’s intolerable. She should be impeached and jailed.

You really believe no other judge ever has their own opinion on a topic until and unless a case comes up before them? What planet do you live on? Priscilla

How exactly did she violate the Code? Did she, for example, know any of the plaintiffs personally? Did she have a financial interest in the outcome of the case? What part of the code is she supposed to have violated? If you can’t point out the section of the code you allege she violated, then STFU.

Indeed. The URL leads back to a hysterical anti-gay rant-o-rama site, quite reminiscent of the "skies will fall if we let negro and white children sit together" propaganda which was published by Southern anti-integrationists during the 1950s. The allegation in the article should be weighed accordingly. I’m delighted to say that I’m one of the few folks who actually DID get to cast a "gratitude vote" for SJC Justice Marshall, when she was recently listed on a ballot to serve as a trustee for Yale University, against two other alumni candidates. (I should check to see if the winner has been announced!)

I bet you think it was just peachy keen that Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia is hunting buddy with Dick Cheney, even though Cheney has a lawsuit pending against him before the Supreme Court.
SLAM-FRIGGIN’-DUNK!!! Those of you who are such purists about judicial integrity and impartiality, please weigh this: TWO of the U.S. Supreme Court Justices who voted to seat the UNELECTED George Bush Jr. — specifically, Justices Scalia and Thomas — had close family members WHO WERE ACTIVELY WORKING FOR THE BUSH CAMPAIGN. Had they recused themselves because of this conflict, as they should properly have done, the Supreme Court vote would have been four to three to allow a complete audit of ALL the disputed Florida ballots, which would almost certainly have given us a verified Gore presidency. Never forget: Gore WON THE POPULAR VOTE decisively. Bush LOST THE POPULAR VOTE by at least a million ballots. Come back and talk to us about Justice Marshall’s "judicial integrity and impartiality" when you’ve dealt with the reprehensible behavior of Scalia and Thomas on this far more important issue.

(1) The recount Gore was asking for would have resulted in his losing Florida (with the coupled irony that the recount Bush was asking for would have resulted in his losing Florida). (2) Your statement of "certainly" is a lie, as the media-led post-election recounts showed. Never forget: Gore WON THE POPULAR VOTE decisively. Bush LOST THE POPULAR VOTE by at least a million ballots.

You liberals always have to come back to irrelevancies when you don’t have an real argument. Amend the Constitution to abolish the Electoral College first, and then you can start wanking about your poor candidate winning the popular vote. —

Read the Constitution: the President is elected by the Electoral College, NOT the popular vote. Why does this constantly need to be pointed out? There’s no proof Gore would have won if the Supremes had decided otherwise. In fact, I recall that an independent media group did an audit and Bush still won. There’s also the matter of the Democrats trying to keep military absentee ballots from being counted – not so pretty either. Let’s face it: both side stunk and stink. No system is perfect, but we do the best we can. I don’t much like Bush and won’t vote for him, but I really think it’s time that Democratic die-hards quit whining about 2000 and concentrate on 2004. Bush is a legimate president, period. Forget it. Grow up and move on and vote the bastard out now, when it counts. m
