Certainly an odd bird, but that in itself isn’t a condemnation, why old LV himself qualifies as that.  Thompson was a hell of a writer, obsessed with America’s dark underbelly, but he sure knew what to do with a typewriter. His book on the Hell’s Angels is a must-read.

There have been rumors about him being in very bad health for awhile now, the big C has been mentioned too.  If true, Thompson is just the kind of guy who would decide to punch his own ticket while he still could rather than end his days in a bed with tubes in every orifice.  As neither of us really knows, your suggestion of waiting for the coroner to report is a good idea.
